Thread: Anyone Running the AEM True Boost boost controller & gauge?

i was wondering if anyone in the community is running the aem true boost boost controller and gauge? i was wondering what your expierence is with it, if you would recomend it, and the pros and cons?

i was thinking of purchasing one of them, however at the moment im running just a ebay style manual boost controller and it works just fine. but i wasnt sure weather or not the selonoid style boost controllers were more or less responsive than a manual boost controller?

im running the aem stand alone and wasnt sure if this controller and gauge in particular can be used in sync with the stand alone? i only have been using wastegate springs and mbc in the past to control boost. now im looking into a little more complex way to control it. as i feel the aem true boost is just that. but wanted a little bit more insight to it.

Tuned a S13 RB25 with one last night. Works great, very accurate, no issues what so ever.

do you know if the gauge adjusts in duty cycle percentages only or if you can adjust it by the psi?

Im using the aem truboost, used it on my t2 setup and my last setup. Works awesome. Just set your wastegate crack pressure and adjust your a and b settings.

It works in duty cycle not psi. But its very very easy to tune and setup. And it keeps boost right where it needs to be. I was running my external wastegate hooked up just like an internal on the diagram. Only using the bottom fitting to open the gate. Again never had an issue at all. Still be using it on my next setup as well and even though im gonna be going over the 30psi that it reads up to without the 5 bar sensor im gonna use the aem ems to datalog the boost and still just use the gauge/controller to set it. it will adjust to higher than 30psi just not read it out correctly without the 5 bar sensor.

thanks for the input, i have heard alot of good things on this solenoid gauge setup, and although the mbc works just fine, i def would like to get a more complex system setup for the boost control plus i like how its a gauge and its a controller this is definitly nice.

does it have like the replay setup where it can show you your last psi made on the run?

i also only plan on running 26lbs max so the 3.5bar map sensor will work for me right now. i dont think the 2871r is going to be that efficent past that point lol.

yes, it goes by key cycle. It shows the max psi that you hit per key cycle, its a nice feature. Cuz i can do a pass down the strip and after the run i believe its hold the right button down for 2 seconds and it will display the max boost hit. Its accurate, i set my boost controller B setting to 55% duty cycle, 14psi gate crack pressure since i had a 1 bar spring and it was set to a solid 25psi. Made a pass and sure enough the highest boost was 25.X lbs

I love it. Its a switch on the fly thing. I would keep the boost controller to OFF setting to run my wastegate pressure, then A setting for 20psi, which is what i ran daily anyways, then B setting to 25 psi, then changed it to around 65% duty cycle for when i upped the boost to 30psi. Worked like a charm man. You will love it. Sooo easy to operate and make changes to no getting out of the car guessing where you need to put the mbc to to get the proper levels.

It has a lot of other options i didnt use like a boost by time (Scramble) setting that will run your a level boost for a certain time period when you hit the switch that you can wire into the controller. So say your launching, hit the switch at the launch and you know it will take you about 4 seconds to get into 3rd gear, so set the time to 4 seconds and launch and after 4 seconds it will revert to the high boost setting.

I didnt use that option but its easy to wire in and use.

that sounds like a pretty cool option with that switch you can wire in.

i found one here locally for a pretty good deal so i might just have to jump on it.

i know you are running alot of other aem products did you go with the true boost beucase it matched your other aem parts or becuase of its options and all that?

just wanted to know cause i was weighing it against like the profec series from greddy and the hks series. but all of those are pretty much just the selonoid activated boost controllers and not a boost controller/gauge like the aem's are, well the higher end hks or acvr from apexi are kinda gauge oriented but not like the aem. so what do you think about the other boost controller options weighed against the aem...just wanna make a good choice.

i recently sold my plx wideband and pretty much want to have a nice setup again so i am going back to a aem wideband, i went from a aem wideband to plx wideband now back to aem, and then i was looking at this aem true boost too.

I got it because its AEM and i heard good things about it. My buddies have used the greddy and hks ones and they can be confusing as hell to use.

I wanted something to match my aem wideband and that was simple to use and after doing the research on it, it was my obvious choice by far. No other options even considered for price and quality and function.

does this gauge wire in with the aem stand alone to use the boost features on the aempro software? or am i thinking of something completely different?

reason i ask is when i was getting my car tuned on wastegate spring boost pressure they werew talking about getting a solenoid wired in to use the aempro software to control boost. but wouldnt that defeat the purpose of having a gauge controller and the solenoid or ?

The solenoid is the same solenoid used on the AEM standalone for the boost control option. You can do it either way. You can leave the boost control up to the gauge or just buy the gauge set and use the gauge just to see and monitor boost and hook the boost controller solenoid up to the aem and let the aem do the work. But i would rather use the gauge and let the gauge/controller do the work on that. You should still be able to datalog boost levels using a map sensor if thats what your using on your aem.
