Follow proper maintenance procedures (change fluids) and having a spare doesn't hurt (and can save time). Main killer is abuse or harsh use. Majority of the expert folks on this forum have mentioned this in other posts - a harder clutch that 'bites' can put more strain. Dropping a clutch during launch (hard on tranny) may not give you a better launch compared to slipping it slightly (less hard on tranny). 20psi on a disco potato in third gear can put some serious strain as boost kicks in.

There are numerous factors which can cause the transmissions to break.

However, at the end of the day, these are still pretty beefy transmissions. They last fairly long as people mentioned and can take lots of daily driving abuse.
