Gimmick of 2010: Water-Cooled Wastegate from TiAL

Seriously, they should be shot. The ONLY benefit I see to this gate, is that it's a lower profile than the older gate. You can therefore fit it into a tighter spot.

Otherwise, it's full of fail.

Explain yourself.

Road track guys asked for this because diaghrams overheat and get ruined pretty quick at track. V-bands because the 2 bolts shake loose.

This was customer input driven. Personally I will run one.

I'm sorry but a passive fin wastegate, I can understand.

An active water-cooled wastegate doesn't make much sense to me. Of course v-bands are great, I had them on the 44mm gate on my setup. I'm not disputing that.

I don't believe the watercooling does anything exceptionally well, though. IMO, if you're worried about damaging the diaphram, you should look into an alternative gate setup such as a piston driven gate.

Welcome to Synapse Engineering, and say goodbye to your rubber diaphram wastegate.

Eh... On a track car where all your air is ducted and won't make it to wastegate.... active fin is worthless.

+1 for synapse... just saying this is their answer to customer comments. Size for packaging is nice now too.

Active/Passive, whatever. Good point on air being ducted, though it can't be completely sealed off if they don't expect the engine bay to melt to pieces. It is kinda hard to have wastegate placement so that it receives any direct air, without making the front end look like crap too.

I agree they listened, but they should have ditched the diaphram. The packaging is okay, it's a bit smaller, but it's nothing CRAZY as far as dimensional improvements. The top hat is what, 5mm shorter?

Perhaps too many people had cracking issues like I did. I have the older style that is not water-cooled and I cracked the both of mine. This was probably done to prevent further issues like the ones I had.

Talked with Nate, and the Miata guys are beating the gates up and melting diaphrams.

My response to him was the same as here. Buy a better designed wastegate. Looking at the design overview of a TiAL watercooled gate has me thinking that the cooling effects of a waterjacket (that obviously is VERY small) will do very little to prevent longterm failure. It's just like a watercooled turbo. There have been minimal differences between non-watercooled and watercooled turbochargers, as far as their performance. If anything, a watercooled turbo gives un-necessary heat to the cooling system that you need to combat.

Why not just run a non-watercooled turbo and be smart when you drive? Don't shut the car off after a 15 minute hot-lap session.

I love my Synapse! I get bad gas milage with it cause it spools the turbo quicker. (yes, I used both Tial and Synapse on the same car/set-up.)

As it was designed to do! It's great knowing that it's more of an on/off valve, and not a stupid creep to pressure valve.
