SO LOST Please help me Nissan Geniuses
I am working on a customers engine build trying to come up with a quote more or less to build this engine he brought to me. I have literally been sitting here at work all day long trying to find out what this engine is, what year it is, and what I need to look for when ordering parts. Anyway what I have found out is the block casting# is a 78E and the head is a 53J which according to a forum somewhere is a bluebird sr20det, I was told it was an Avenir W11, come to find out the turbo# says otherwise, it is the W10 part#. So do I have a bluebird sr20, do I have a W10 Avenir SR20, are they all the same, Any idea on how to tell what year this is out of? Any answers that anyone has would be very helpful. Basically I need to find out what gaskets to order, what camshafts, everything really.

According to this:

You have a bluebird DET. Could be anywhere between a 89-95

What's the turbo #? I'd use that to estimate. It's probably a W10. The W11 got confused a lot with the W10 and the fact that your customer says it was a W11 and the turbo is from a W10 tells me it's 90% a W10.

What color is the valve color? Silver? If so, definitely an Avenir (unless custom color)

Also, you can read my wonderful sticky:

14411-1E001 is the turbo# and the valve cover is bare metal silver.

regardless of whether its a bluebird or avenir will the same parts work on both, such as the head gasket and cams?

yes.

Actually, I'm reading your post again. It really doesn't matter if it's a bluebird or an Avenir(even though it's a W10). These engines basically share all the same parts. You basically need to know if it's a DET and it is..so there ya go.
