Turbo on Stock VE Pistons?
Hey all

Just been reading about highcompression on a VE+T works well. I am doing a budget VE+T build and was planning on using DET rods with GTIR DET Pistons (all stock items). What I am wondering now is would DET rods and stock 2 litre VE pistons work ok with boost? What is it about the NA pistons that make them weaker than the DET pistons?

Any help would be VERY helpful as I am without car at the moment and need to get this done :-(

Thanks

Paul

the ring lands on the ve pistons are too small, any detonation and the pistons crack.

Use stock VE rods, and get some DET pistons for ~9.3:1 compression. Should be able to run up to 14psi daily with tuning with the proper setup.

are the DET rods not better than the VE ones?

Rods are all the same they all are good for 400 whp

I have placed the VE rods side by side with the DET rods and the DET's are much wider it looks. Will confirm with a measure tonight.

So with the pistons.... any DET ones ok or GTIR ones better?

the 54c rods were the strongest put into a sr20 from the factory.

Ok so I measure the rods in two different spots (under the piston end and above the main end). The DET rods are approx 3-4mm (0.12 -0.16 inchs) wider accross the length of the rod when compared to stock SR20VE rods.

the only issue with running det internals in a ve is that you run the risk of hitting a valve on the piston. det pistons do not have valve reliefs built in. this is why I bought cp pistons for my build. I also went with after market rods because the gtir rods weight 732 grams each.

That is the same setup I am running now a ve motor with det pistons and rods stock vvl headgasket. Goodluck, I have gotten the car in the mid-upper fours. I love it, budget build 100%.

I believe the GTIR Pistons have the right cut outs as their engines have the squirters....

wow brilliant to hear. I did have CP pistons, Manley rods and acl bearings but have sold these as the money had to go elsewhere :-( Im fighting now to keep the sidewinder manifold and the 3071 r turbo, but feel its a waste to use that turbo on a stock DET internals engine... so will just use the GTIR T28 I have I guess :-(
