Thread: found a INSANE deal

so i found a guy selling a complete swap, minus clutch. he had it listed as a built sr20det with cometic headgasket, arp headstuds, eagle rods and cp pistons. gtir fuel rail, gtr injectors, lightning maf, nismo adjustable fpr, and forged tuning ecu. anyways, his asking price is ridiculously low, so of course im sceptacle. what should i look for on this setup to give me reassurance. can i do a compression test, by using a portable impact on the crank nut? didnt want to damage the crank, but its out of the car, and the tranny is off. just wanted to do a complete compression test. anyways, its a nutso deal. and whats with the ecu? never heard of them, and its chipped and scketed. if i pull the pan i should be able to tell if the rods are aftermarket? along with the headstuds? i figured theyd look diffrent. definatley has a commetic headgasket. anyways, just wanted input.

sounds to good to be true to me as well. But if you insist, yes, you should be able to pop off the bottom oil pan and see if the rods are aftermarket. you should also be able to pop off the valve cover and see if the head bolts are actual bolts with hex heads (stock) or ARP(stud with a flanged hex nut).

At a minimum its a det with a layered metal headgasket I can tell that much. Everything so far is exactly as described.

well, then nothing in my life would have occured. lol. i come across steals/deals all day long. so far, weve confirmed the pistons, eagle rods and arp rod bolts. i have never seen a motor so fresh in my life. cranks been machined, still assembly lube residue. so clean. builds serious compression on the stand. i wont know till its in the car, but everything checks out.

I would do a leak down test on it, pop the lower pan and confirm the rods, pull the VC and check the head bolts, and check the stamp/sticker on the ECU for the tune. Oh... and crank it by hand to make sure it turns normally (since it's out of the car).

^ very good idea, definitly make sure the engine is what he says it is, i know good things do happen, and that you can find good buys, jut be on the opposed side until you confirm the engine is good healthy and what he says it is
