Thread: compressor surge

in lower rpms about 2500-4000 when I back off the throttle the BOV does the turkey call, and the car jerks with it also I can watch the boost gauge drop in steps is this compressor surge? this is on a GTI-r motor with the stock t28 running 14psi, and the factory valve recirculating.

It sounds like it. Take off you BOV and test it with a handheld vacuum pump. You should be able to rent one at an auto parts store. I don't know when the stock BOV should open, but whatever you idle at, let's say 18-20inhg, it should open well before that.

what would be a good replacement !g dsm maybe? I want something that will fit the stock hoses and work for 18 psi

Greddy Type S or somthing like it. They work great and work well at higher boost levels.

do they all use that flange or is there one that has a hose fitting on the bottom. I really don't want to have to cap off the plenum then cut the piping to fit the mating flange

I really like the 1g DSM BOV it came stock with some Nissans, it is cheap and works up to like 20psi uncrushed. It also fits same as stock.

If you already have a flange like the stock Nissan one like the ones on a top mount intercoolers stock, and you don't want to weld a new flange on the DSM is a good cheap option. You can find them on EBAY for $50 or less, or at a local junkyard for probably less. The one in that picture had a piece of pipe bolted to it that you don't need unless you are making your own FMIC or something. The DSM BOV is a good cheap way to go.
If you think you will be running more than 20psi in the future maybe you might want to get something that can take even more boost. Personally I really like the Synapse BOV design over just about anything else I have seen.

this is a GTI-r motor there isn't a flange thats why this is such a hassle otherwise the 1g dsm would be a no brainer
