Thread: Oil Weight for Summer?

I'm using our house brand fully synthetic oil. I did a little research on it and it's distributed by the came company that distributes Valvoline products $2.65/qt. for fully synthetic, i can't go wrong And i'm using 5w30.

I'm going to run FSM-recommended 10w30 and watch my oil pressure gauge. If it goes below 14psi at idle I'll go for some 10w40 this summer. I'll run 5w30 in the winter.

What oil pressure are you guys at with 5w30 in the summer? Seems too thin for a turbo car.

im using all aem digital gauges with 5w30. but i have some oil leaks so will thicker oil like 15w50 make them worse? i plan on using thicker oil next oil change too. I noticed royal purple would break down after a month or so of use. The viscosity would break down and my oil pressure would too. So i went back to penzoil platium and that oil never breaks down.

I'd assume a thicker oil would make the leaks not as bad because the oil will not get thin enough to get through where it's leaking. It could be since you're running such a thin oil it's just a naturally occurring leak(under FSM 14psi) and you may notice it gone after running a ticker oil. That'd be my assumption but what do I know :o

i checked my local pep boys to see what oils they had and they carry the valvoline vr1 20w50 im going to switch to see how i like it. i hear its pretty good and only 4.29 a qt

so wat should i switch to for summer in fl? 15w50? 10w40?

In FL I'd run at least 10w30 year around. I'd try a 10w40 and see what oil pressure you are getting w/that and if that isn't working then move up to 15w50 or so. I'd say use your oil pressure gauge to tell you what oil weight you need.

I run 5w40 all year round and have never seen an oil pressure reading below 25 psi.

I run shell rotella 5w40 great stuff. Oil pressure stays around 35 psi at idle.

oh wow that seems too high...

I may be seeing lower oil pressure than I should @ 10w30 just because I'm running cheap ass dino O'Rielly oil for breaking in my cams.
