I know, you are worried about inspection and the code the transmission would throw. But, isn't there a way to drill the gearbox and install the crank angle sensor if need be?? If so, you should be more than capable, correct??
I am just saying. After you rebuild this one, and then go out and get a 6 speed swap, to me the 6 speed is still somewhat "unproven" (although most things point to it being fairly stronger than the P11). And I am pretty sure by the time you add up the price for rebuild and the addition price of a 6 speed swap, you will be knocking (if not beating) down the door of the price of the PAR set.
I am pretty sure that gearbox for sale could probably take everything you could throw at and still be under stressed.
The only thing I would worry about if the set is straight cut gears........I have heard Subbies with them, and they seem very civilized from both inside and outside the car as far as NVH are concerned ( a good friend of mine has a straight cut (I think PAR) gearset in his DD WRX)
