puttin the head on today.

head courtesy of Andreas Miko. Other than a lot of carbon in the exhaust valves that was preventing the valves from seating correctly, this head was mint. We cleaned the valve seats and pulled 20inhg vacuum first shot.

These are the new Golden Eagle head studs. A lot of people here said they were a bit long, well... they were wrong? These are of the studs set as per instructions. Every thread was used, and there was none to spare. Actually, if anything, the studs should be about 1/4" longer. But they installed perfectly and the threads had no rough spots in them at all. (unlike every set of ARPs I've Used). The quality on the studs is top notch!

This is a pic of the Cometic gasket. You can see that it was blown in several places.

I wrapped the manifold to keep heat in and to prevent heat soaking of the radiator. I will be adding a vent to the hood (reluctantly) in order to get rid of some heat in slow moving traffic. The runners were spaced too closely to wrap each runner individually, so I hope this doesn't cause any issues with the SCH40 steel. I'm sure it will be ok, but the wrap looks a little funny. Function>Form.

Here's the dirty bitch here. The motor is far from clean on the outside, but the inside looks like new. I will be investing in some tough cleaner to take off some exhaust soot from the blown ex manifold gasket I had with my log manifold. Brake clean and carb clean barely seem to do anything. Any ideas?

I should have the car started next week. I haven't been working on getting it going as much as I should, but work is tiring. I get home and just wanna sleep and I haven't had a day off in 10 days until today.

looks good man, cant wait to see it out on the strip, you buy a set of slicks or you just plan on messing with street tires or drag radials ?

I haven't bought the slicks yet. The car needs to get registered and then I buy slicks. Need that rear O2 sensor hooked up though.

take a wire wheel to that carbon build up on the block.

More pics with a manifold mockup.

As you can tell, this is far from a "BLING" build. This motor is built to perform. It may not look pretty, but it will get the job done. For a DD, this thing is hard to keep clean, so I'm not really worried about the engine looking so terrible on the outside.

I guess I could paint stuff, or powdercoat it. I just don't see the point. Maybe once it is together and broken in I will clean her up a bit.

Looks like it's coming along nicely. Try some oven cleaner on the dirty bits. It does WONDERS. I've used it numerous times on ATV's that had crap caked in the radiator from going through mud. Always made them look like new.

looks nice...the 1.06 devided turbine is HUUUUGHE...looks like double the size of a T28 0.64 :-)

yea, the housing is a good size. I like it so far. Was actually gaining some response over the .78ar I had before, which is nearly unheard of.

I am going to get oven cleaner now. Now that I think about it, that stuff works amazing! I don't know why I didn't think of that!

I will post pics of the difference.

Nice build, Making me think about going turbo in the near future with my VE. Definitely curious as to how the 16ve cams respond to boost, I have a set to try just in case.

Melted front motor mount. Now the manifold is heat wrapped, and there is a new mount on. A solid metal mount. No more melting.

Yeah, I decided to put the motor in today. That way it will be running on sunday for sure. Got everything in, but need to wire it and fill fluids. Then I am going to run it on jack stands for a little bit and flush out the oil. After that I will fill again with oil and run it for about 100 miles or so and flush again. I want to make sure all debris gets out of this motor and everything is super clean before I start beating on it.

The clutch feel is amazing as always, and the brakes were bled and they feel pretty tight now.

The manifold was treated with DEI silicon spray to aid in keeping heat in. It is supposed to help anyway. The black looks bitchin.

The oven cleaner didn't quite work out for cleaning the block. Oh well, you cant see it anyway. I will be detailing the whole engine bay and cleaning it up. Also, I am going to be cleaning up the wire harness and the plumbing as well to make things more simple/reliable.
