I blew IT! :) 56k don't do it!
I dropped the motor today and took it apart.

First thing I noticed was this:

The oil squirters were found in the oil pan. All 4. Well, this explains the slightly lower oil pressure on this build than the last motor. I figured I pulled a Cliff and the chain oiler came out. Well, after looking at the motor it seems as though my crank hit the oilers? Keep reading.

Once the head was pulled I saw the pistons. Cyl 1 though 4 in order.

I then saw that my ring gap was a little too big.

The head was melted.

And the REAL culprit to the broken oil squirters was...!

The PISTONS! Apparently the cutouts for the oilers were in the completely wrong place. I thought for sure the crank did it, but didn't know how it would... But these very small, hard to see mashed parts in the underside of the pistons tells the tale. This motor has over 33K miles with squirters shooting sideways lol.

Pistons were JE customs designed for the VE. Looks like they messed up.

BTW there was crud all over the engine. The front motor mount was melted from the heat of the manifold. The head gasket was leaking on cyl 2, 3, and 4. Cross leaking on 3 and 4. Head lift? Nah, prob the detonation.

I guess lots of miles has its downsides. 24psi and pump gas will detonate lol. BTW fuel cut rev limiters also cause detonation. If you ever close plug gaps after driving, uh... spiritedly, then you are prob detonating. I would close gaps all the time after boucing the rev limiter in 2nd and 3rd. 1st seemed fine though.

Overall though, the valves don't look bent at all. But there are cracks in the head around the seats which may be causing some leakdown.

Cheers to the next build.

After seeing this carnage, it makes me understand why I can't seem to make over 450whp. But considering I made 447whp and 402wtq, I am glad to know I made such numbers on such a catastrophe.

Dammmmm its all I can say....
See at least you found why you are not making better numbers on your setup
That motor have seen some serious detonation my friend since day one.....
But at least your next build should generate some serious numbers on your turbo and manifold setup....
Good luck...

What are u running for fuel management? I would say a standalone would have saved that motor...

JWT tune. Timing is conservative, but AFRs are really really good. just below 12.0:1

Hopefully they will do something. This is crap, I've been putting a lot of miles on this and had no idea this even happened. The motor seemed to turn over just fine on the stand too.

I'm finding pretty good deals from everywhere on motors. $700 to $1100 shipped. Ebay has good deals. Local shops can get them for cheap too. Just need to find out whether to buy a whole engine, and part out what is left, or get just a head.

Mmmmmmm N1 cams....
