Bar and Plate Vs Tube and Fin
Anyone had any real dyno time switching between the two? Right now Ive got a JRC Tube and fin on my car and I love it. Ive got a bar and plate IC sitting in front of me also. But Im not understanding how the bar and plate is supposed to be better or flow better. The interior design of both my IC's are the same....any thoughts or anyone have a good link to read?

what is the desity of the core, that makes a big difference too. what brands are you comparing?

Something tells me you're not paying enough attention to the details to tell the difference?
The difference between the two was been covered at length all over the Internet some 10-15 years ago. The data is still out there, you'll just have to search for it. Once you see some pictures though the difference should be obvious. Tube-and-fin designs have wonderfully turbulent internal designs where the cores meet the end tanks.

You quoted him as saying "the interior looks the same". This has nothing to do with whether the intercooler core is bar and plate, or tube and fin.

The interior of a tube-and-fin design (where the core ends and the end tank begins) is much different from a bar-and-plate design and is precisely where the trouble with tube-and-fin designs lay.

My friend switched from a tube and fin to a bar and plate on his turbo cobra recenty and dynoed. Take in mind his first intercooler was very restrictive for his setup and he made 568whp. He gained 40whp from the change and was able to pass the 700whp mark just by raising the boost just 3 psi.

Is this primarily because the ends of the tubes sit proud of the the end plate? A bar & plate design is hardly ideal either, as ~50% of the surface of the core is just a flat plate - there's nothing directing air into the core. With that in mind, how beneficial do you think it would be to shape the ends of the tubes into bellmouthes?

I need a computer that will handle solidworks.

you definately have a bar and plate intercooler installed on yout NX My car has a tube and fin style.

Jerry you sure? I think you have it backwards...*edit* just looked and mine is def tube and fin. I chose that design because I wanted the front end of my car to still be able to breath with the front mount since we all know how well the NX cools even stock with its ONE opening for air.
