well cp spec sheet dated 2/11/10 say the clearance is .003. I plan on getting the pistons swain coated so it will be less than that when I am done. I also double checked the pistons my self and compared them to a grade 2 oem 54c I had sitting.

I think I'm just gonna give in and get the vet pistons. The upper ring land is not the primary concern with detonation its the land below the upper ring as the ring is being pounded by it. But keep it away completely and there is no worry.

I may be investing in a set of these. Local guy can get me them for a good price. But Mazworx sells them for a great price too!

My stock VET pistons disagree:

Cortrim1, did you get any data on the size (cc) of the dish? I couldn't find any info so went with Arias pistons as their dish was the closest match to the standard VET pistons. Here's a pic for comparison - no valve cutouts, but still had +2mm valve clearance on VET cams. The dome is similar to the one on the CP pistons.

thats just shows that it got very hot very quickly. Im talking about small amounts of detonation. Not detonation enough and long enough to melt a pistons. Been there done that. haha

But a small occassional detonation pull put a lot of stress on the upper ring itself before it starts to do any damage to the piston. Again do it long enough though and sure the pistons gonna do that. haha.

The spec sheet does not have a number. The dome is larger on the arias piston.

that piston had a serious issue. Looks like the piston next to it is pitted as well.

That was the result of some serious detonation - refer to How not to treat a genuine SR20VET
