Ha of course not TeKKiE , I'm just paranoid about oil now days. One sludgy engine is enough .

Combustion does contain exhaust soot, which could leak into the oil thus making it darker, I wouldn't for say call it clean at that point :-D.

BTW another good read: Car Bibles : The Engine Oil Bible

+1 for mobil 1. I use 0w30 in my bolt-on se-r daily driver.
4000-5000 miles per change.
I switched to WIX filters, previously oem only.
I have only used mobil 1 except for a couple changes with amsoil full synth, from 44k miles when I bought it until now, 199,xxx miles.

Currently Shell rotella 10w40 full synth in the turbo car.

The German stuff only comes from Autozone afaik. I've had very good luck with it and my UOAs proved it. I've always had good results with Castrol.

I'm with you there man my VE sucked that stuff down fast. GC cured the consumption and had better UOAs.

From reading about the K series in my EP3 they seem to suck M1 and RP through the pcv which is I think the same as my VE did with RP and you experienced with M1 (you've got a VE oil pump yes?).

The engines are designed to do this and so I don't think your oil consumption with M1 has to do with your rings. This is where oil science gets complicated and my eyes roll back in my head.

For a long time I thought the consumption was a sign of poor quality oil. This may not be the case always as it has to do with atomization from high pressure oil pumps (ala VE/K series).

Long story short I'm back to square one on oil choice but still prefer GC.

Interesting!!! I'd REALLY like some sources to read from regarding this. I just purchased GC from Autozone as well. $6.99 is a small price to pay for motor longevity. I purchased 0-30, since I've been reading how well it performs on cold starts in the winter. Lets see if the noise in the head quiets down as well. Kinda anxious to change to the GC already, but I'm going to give the valvoline a little more time.

My motor ate RP like a fat kid eats cake.

Changed to GC and it's minty.

I can get RP for about $5/qt., where i have to pony up $7/qt. for GC.....

You can read till you pass out on Bobistheoilguy (BITOG) and ephatch has some interesting discussions on oil consumption.

People will tell you that only fools run 0-30 on a turbo but IMO it gives good startups in the winter and GC acts more like a 40 weight when hot according to my BITOG research.

The thing is even with UOAs and good research you still don't know for sure. Even though you aren't consuming oil it doesn't mean the engine is properly lubricated at 6krpm and full boost or at startup fwiw.
