Thread: types of gear oil

Andreas Miko suggested I run the Valvoline DuraBlend 80w90, so I have been. I blew up two transmissions using Redline Shockproof. I was making about 300whp, but I broke second gear on the first transmission, and third gear on the second transmission. Neither time I was driving hard, it just stripped the teeth off. Most likely not the oil's fault.

However, stories like this make me wonder. I use redline shockproof, but I started a thread about it a while back. I was curious what the failure rate was from people's transmissions running shockproof. Seems every tranny I've seen fail, has been using Shockproof Heavy.

Theres a few types of Royal Purple that we can use. They have thick stuff and they have thinner stuff. I have been using them for years now with no problems at all.

i run the redline shockproof heavy and to me if you are making around 350hp r more or if you drive the car hard the tranny is just a time bomb ready to go off and the fate is inevitable its going to break but i have noticed it is easier to drive and shifts a lot smoother

have used the 75w90 max gear with thier lsdd addative for quite some time. broke 3 trannies with redline mt90 and haven't broke one since i have changed. plus it smells like grapes yes!!!!

I have used the penzzoil syncromesh and not even 2 weeks later the synchro went out, so call me crazy but I think it had a little to do with it, I only drove the car 50 miles with that stuff in it before it started grinding. I tried swapping to some lucas to mabe quiet the grind but no go, although that stuff was thick as could be. Car was making around 370 with that. Seems like Redline is the way to go by the thread either the heavy or the mt90.

My 5th gear went out while using royal purple....but i think it was age.

i believe syncromesh is a gl5 oil which is very close to gm syncromesh which is more suited for hondas that use low viscosity gear oil

same went with my buddies b15 trans that started popping out of gear. Gear changes were never very smooth matter fact grinded hard every quick shift. So needless to say on this new gearstack he is going back to Mobil1 75w90 which he has never had a problem with. I think the mobil 1 is one of the smoothest shifting oils ive felt in our trannies. Although this Valvoline 85W140 is shifting pretty nice too when it warms up. Butter with no grinding.
