Thread: types of gear oil

Just curious about what people are using so please vote on what your using and suggest anything else that I missed. Please explain the good and the bad. Oh and also what kinda numbers your putting down.

Coastal. 80w-90. I run this in my tranny, I have ran back to back track runs with 0 problems as of yet.

our buddie is a mechanic at the nissan dealer here and he said all the big drums of gear oil that they have are Coastal 75w-90. thats what i prefer since i figure ill blow my tranny up regardless but for daily. i like the mobile

The stuff wont blow a hole in your wallet either at $15-20 for a 5 quart bottle. So you can afford to flush the fluid after every 3-4 hard trackdays. If your meticulous like me that is .

I always used mobil 1 75w-90, at $7/ qt its not too bad and its definetly pretty good for every day use. However i wanted to switch to a much thicker gear oil Mobil 1 85w-140 synthetic but at $17/ qt i was shocked to say the least.

So for now i went with the Valvoline 85w-140, its thick as hell, matter fact its soo thick that during the cold mornings when i let the clutch out after startup in neutral the car actually tries to move foward and it bogs the engine down for a second. Then when it warms up its fine but definetly sounds better with absolutely no trans noise at all. Shifts are nice, smooth and crisp when warmed up.

I want to switch to the Redline Heavy shockproof as its equivelent to a 250W oil. I need all the cusion i can get on the gears to help my trannies survive.

I am using the strawberry syrup in my trannies for the last couple of years now.
I found 2 local places that always have it in stock

yeah i have to order it, One place here used to stock redline products but dont anymore. Sucks but hey $6/ qt on ebay for it. Plus shipping. So still not bad.

Im running Redline mt-90 right now, however i am gonna switch to redline SP soon.

I would not suggest Coast to anyone. I used it earlier last year, I went back to Redline in no time. The difference in the shifting was significant. Redline felt so smooth while coast felt like water was in there.

I'm about to try out Penzoil to see if it's any better then redline, it's cheaper and available locally .
