Thread: proper cool down b4 shut down?????

im running a modded setup. avenir, cams, s13 t25, bla bla bla....
i have the coolant and obviously oil lines hooked up to the turbo.
is it extremely important to "cool down" before shutting off the car with the coolant lines hooked up? with the COLD new england weather here and the motor/coolant not really reaching over 180 degrees...would it be ok to just shut down when parking my car, or still cool down? the temps actually rise at an idle after the COLD air has ceased to hit the radiator. with the coolant lines hooked up and basically setup as it would be from the factory, would it then be reccommended to "cool down" if bought new from the dealership or in the owners manual?

No need for a "cooldown" or turbo timer with a watercooled turbine. It's a nice feature to have, but not necessary. Those that only run oil-cooled turbines require cool down periods to prevent coking of oil in the turbine, which will lead to turbine failure.

That is actually the whole point of having a water cooled turbo. No turbo timer needed, and you don't have to worry about coking of the bearings like in an oil-cooled turbo.

Very nice feature, but the OEMs started doing that because they know the avg person won't let the car cool down every single time they shut it down.

As much as oil-cooled turbos save on pluming and simplicity, I think the benefits of the water-cooling outweigh the disadvantages of the extra plumbing.

Water cooling the turbo actually causes the water to remain circulating through the turbo and thus cooling it effectively with no need to idle the motor. As the water cools it acts like a siphon and circulates the coolant through the turbo. It is remarkably effective, you would be surprised. There are many incorrect assumptions that the water cooled turbo still should be idled after pulling into the driveway, this is incorrect completely.

I would say let it idle for a short time if you just got through thrashing the hell out of it, but if you were driving normally say before pulling into your driveway you should be fine. Avenir mani's GET HOT.

I would beat the piss out of my 30r right before shut down. People thought I was nuts but after explaining it to them, they started researching more on watercooled turbochargers.

If you consider this: Most auto manufacturers do not provide turbo timers with their turbocharged variants, since the snails are watercooled. If watercooling is enough for them, surely it's enough for you

i always immediately shut down my car after driving, nice having a water cooler turbo.
