gas porting
anyone ever fooled with gas porting their pistons?? Or had it done?

I wouldn't do it for longevity's sake. Gas porting increases strain on the cylinder walls, and will wear the rings down faster.

I've always been told that it was an alternative to the quality of the hone you had done to the block when replacing cylinders and rings.

From the guys at JE:
Gas porting will always make more horsepower. the only negative to gas porting is as you increase loading against the cylinder wall, you will also increase wear on the rings. So, if you are talking about an engine that will be expected to run all season, it may not be necessary. but if you are talking about a piston that has low-tension rings, then absolutely. Remember our earlier question about low-tension rings-they always need gas porting to help improve their seal against the cylinder walls in high-performance applications.

FWIW, we don't ahve low-tension rings, otherwise our pistons would come gas-ported as a package...

I can see gas porting helping the guys revving really high. Could keep better ring seal way up there in the rpm range.

But what do I know?

gas porting=much earlier rebuilds then.

Roller rocker motors use low tension rings.

Exactly

Interesting! I didn't know this. What about the VE? Low tension rings there as well?

IMHO there are so many ppl who are making alot of power whom arent using gas porting, so to me i feel its useless. plus if this were a track build, i would say go for it, becuase gas porting would be useful to a build that is going to be REBUILT every season, however if you want this to last a while, i say skip it and move on with the build.

plug i definitly dont think its worth the ammount of power you gain to the price of having to do rebuilds often

Just curious, saw something about it in an engine building catalog.

Gas porting is recommended for high boost drag motors. The cylinder pressure helps the seal of the top ring by pushing behind it. We do this for all our race motors but don't do it on street motors.
