Chain oiler pin!!!!! Tekkie special right here.
So i go and pull my lower oil pan off today so i can reseal it since its had an annoying kinda bad leak for a bit now and i dont like oil getting all over my suspension and frame so i decide to pull it plus i want to see what the inside of the pan looked like after almost 8k miles of abuse on the build.

I get the lower pan off and to my surprise i find the stupid Chain oiler pin in the pan. I am happy to say there was very very little shavings and it was just that fine metallic stuff that accumulates in every single motor ive ever seen. Nothing big and very very little of it. Took very little brake cleaner to get all the oil and buildup out of the pan.

Anyways my question is how important is this chain oiler. Im sure its been in my pan for a long while now. My oil pressure seems fine the only thing i can tell off the bat is that it might be a little lower than a normal VE oil pump. On cold startup at idle i have about 60psi easy, When cold at about 3k i have 80-90psi. The only thing ive noticed is if i take it on longer drives or drive it for a while when it gets fully warmed up and the oil is nice and hot i see about 25-30psi at idle and only about 50-60psi at 3500-4k. Above that it will rise as the rpms rise but when hot from what ive seen while glancing at the guage is i dont hit much above 65-70psi at redline or close to it.

I mean it seems normal to me but from what ive seen others pressures at mine seems a bit low. Again havent had any problems with the motor and after 8k miles of daily abuse the inside of the pan looked great other than to see that stupid oiler.

Question is... Should i take the time to pull the other pan off and pull the oil pump off to put the thing back in place all maybe to have it pop right back out. Im guessing it might just be from the higher oil pressure thats doing this to those oilers. Tekkie i know had this problem but he said his oil pressure at idle went down to like 7psi or something like that and only like 30psi at 3500. Thats way low and he knew something was up. I had no indication by my oil pressure that this thing was laying in the pan. No changes from what it was when i started it up and ran it for the first time until now. My oil pressure acts the same way it always has.

So should i or should i not put the thing back in. So it might bump my oil pressure up maybe 10psi or so if that. But if its gonna just pop right back out then why do it?

Opinions please.

Chain oiler is VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

It keeps the chain properly lubricated, and helps keep your oil pressure up in the oil galleys.

This is how you fix it:

Red loctite, and press it back in with loctite. let it cure for a little bit. Make sure the indentation on the end of the squirter is at the 12 o'clock position so that the ports are on either side of the crank gear.

I have already tested this with a spare block, and it WILL NOT come out again. Vise grips couldn't even rotate it without damaging it.

Look around where I posted pictures of the inside dimension of the chain oiler, and the outside dimension of the port that it presses into.

I took another picture and probably haven't uploaded it yet, but the chain oiler port feeds from the crankshaft area. Without this chain oiler, you run the risk of improper lubrication of the crank journals.

Alright, i mean im sure im flooding oil in there but kinda splatterd im sure. I thought i remember you using loctite on yours. Again its weird that i didnt see any changes in my oil pressure unless it popped out right away on first startup, which is possible. Good deal. Ill just take the time and do it. Dont want to but its for the best to keep the beast running as good as possible.

Yeah i knew the dot on the front went at the 12 oclock and i could tell by where the oil holes were that that was the correct position.

Thanks i guess that was perfect timing to post huh. haha

Yep! Chances are it came out on first fire up, and you've always had lower pressure than you should. I know for a fact that it creates a problem, because I went from 45psi down to 30psi almost immediately during my drive, at running temperatures. I figured it was a combination of oil breakdown and the squirter popping out.

you need the chain oiler. take the time and put it back like tekkie said. I will be doing this on my ve motor when I take it apart for the build.

Sounds good. Sucks but oh well. really didnt want to have to pull those other pans and front cover. haha. Its for the best though. Not like i have anything better to do today.

Thanks man i knew you would chime in. Just not that quickly. Im just thankful it didnt cause any problems though since ive probably had it that way for 7 months now and 8k miles. Im very happy there wasnt very much metalics in the pan either.

yeah if i had known this was a common issue i would have done it right off the bat. I did check to make sure it was seated all the way in the port before i put the motor together though, Oh well i will always remember to do that now. haha

The SAFEST thing you can do is check your bearings while you have the pans off. If you see some signs of premature wear, it's best to replace them before they get worse, or damage the crank. I'm running ACL's and didn't see any signs of wear when I checked rod #1, but I didn't get around to checking all crank journals and rod bearings.

yeah im running the acl's as well. Again there is no bearing material in the pans at all. Everything looks great. The inside of the motor is spotless. I dont think i had low enough to cause damage. My motor is absolutely quiet as hell when running.

thanks again tekkie. Got the pans and pump off already just going to pick up some loctite RED. Everything looked great inside the motor.
