i know removing t stat completlly is a bad idea.
modifying a stock tstat is a much better idea

look a a stock tstat
the smaller round part is used to block the cyl head bypass once the tstat is open

the tstat is on the suction side of the water pump if the cyl head tube is not blocked off the coolant will flow in a loop from the hot head to the cool tstat housing
i have found this to cause higher temps at low engine speed and detionation in high hp cars

also with no tstat the coolant flows to fast through the engine and radiator . if coolant flows to fast it cannot remove enuph heat
when i ran no tstat i had more probs with head lift and detionation

mearlly modifying a stock tstat stuck in the open positon lowered coolant temps but more importantlly increased cylinder head temp consistancy.

the combution chamber temp is so crucal with high hp turbo engines

it you are running a t2 based turbo then most of this wont matter to you

oh now people see what i was trying to say... hmmmm thats a good post

Was thinking logically, coolant that constantly flows keeps things cooler. The car is going to be strictly on the strip, I wanted to keep the car cool in the lanes and be warm by the time i hit the burnout box. Those lines can be long sometimes.

So, to sum things up here, it's like 50/50, some have done it with no ill affects and some disagree, that it's not good. Let me ask those of you that leave it in what temp thermostat are you running? And 91serturbo, I'm curious what your set up is that your temps are getting that high a big .82 or what? Also curious how you get a thermostat to stick open.

i have a sc61 on a 86.5 block malhe pistons and egale rods ve oil pump now low port head

have tried ve and high port heads i really miss the rr head thats a very underestimated head

the head lift and detionation probs i am speaking of do not show up on the temp gauge or ect sensor they react to slowlly to see the cool temp shoot up

have you ever noticed that the cyl head coolant out lets are on the same end of the head? [pass side of head] the head gasket regulates coolant flow from the water pump thru the block atemting to force coolant flow to the drivers side of the head

look at a head gasket most of the coolant passages are blocked on the pass side of the engine progressivlly getting bigger on the way to the drivers side of the gasket

there are two out lets on the head opposite of each other the one facing the rear of the engine leads to the tstat housing port that the small part of the tstat covers when open

the other out let faces the front side of the car and goes to the upper rad hose
with intent to go thru the rad back to the lower hose and tstat housing where the big tube comes from the water pump suction side

if the rear cyl head outlet is not restricted or blocked by the open tstat the coolant will want to flow directlly up thru the block and only cool cyl 1 and alittle of 2 super heating the coolant around 3 and 4 and were is the temp sender located hmm.. on the rear cyl head out let that just got all the cool coolant and none of the very hot coolant from 3 and4

all of this hapens so fast with each shift and rpm change the temps disapate but the aloy retains heat so by 3rd gear thigs tend to get melty

yes an electric water pump would help this condition

but with out the rear cyl head outlet restricted the suction from any water pump will cause the cyl 3 and 4 by pass

excellent explanation *golf clap*

thermostat is staying, now i want to know more about modding it to stay open...

you can always punch the guts out and put the ring back in. it would be some restriction.
