Thread: How freely should a W10 turbo spin?

I just got a W10 setup, t25 journal bearing. I pulled it off the j-pipe and manifold to check it over. When I go to spin the turbo with my hands, there's a decent amount of resistance. How much should there be? It doesn't look like there's been any oil in it in a while so its not very lubricated but I would have thought it would spin more freely, but I haven't had my hands on a turbo in about 5 years so I don't really remember.

i think it should free up once you get some good movement and oil

you should be able to spin the turbine by hand. It should spin freely with little resistance. If you can move the compressor up and down more than 1-2mm and in and out more than .5-1mm it needs a rebuild. Seeing that this is a journal bearing is may be coked on the inside. try pouring a small amount of oil into the inlet and then spin it.

I'd expect it to free up a bit once you dropped some oil into it. It's probably just some cobwebs and old shoe leather inside.

I just got a W10 yesterday and can not move the turbine at all. Rest of the motor seems fine. I'll try some oil later today and see what happens.

You'll have to crank your speakers to hear any noise it makes. Sounds a little bit like metal on metal. Dunno for sure though.

thats not good at all. Time for a rebuild.

The turbo is fine. Once some oil and heat goes through it it will work perfect. I have seen this alot.
