Ball Bearing/Journal Bearing (GT3071r)
Guys I pretty much decided on what Turbo I am going to use on my VE-T set up but, I have one question that maybe one of you guys can answer. I could get the answer from some of my connections but, I figured this topic could make for a good chat. I am about 99% sure I am going to use a GT3071R with a .82 back housing on my set up.

Now to my question. Is there a jouranl bearing turbo that is made that is pretty much a 3071R minus the ball bearing option?

Few reason are the cost of the turbo and the simplicity of only having to run oil lines.

Discuss.

I think the Garrett T3/T04E 60 trim is very simular. I have had 2 cars with near identical setups, (30R vs. T04E) on the dyno at the same time put down simular #'s (give or take a few HP) at the same boost levels. 30R Spooled a bit faster, but not by much.

The 30R sounds cooler tho

Don't quote me on this but I think this is your equivalent. (If that's not it, you'll find it here somewhere.)

I've seen journal bearing turbos with water jackets. It's basically, do you want to run water, or do you want to use a turbo timer?

Journal bearing turbos are easily re-built. Same is not true for ball bearing turbos.

^I've heard this and I would like more quality links about this. I pretty much have everything laid out for my real project build except for what turbo I want to run. Thanks for the full-race link, reminds me of gofast. The journal price and rebuild price seems so much better. If the spool isnt that big of a difference, I may go journal. I'm sure a 4 piece pulley setup and a lightweight flywheel should help that out even more correct? I'm looking to go with a .63 a/r instead of the .82 with a 38mm WG.

trim 50 or 57 will be equivalent to the 3071 both of that turbos will do 500 whp , the key part its choosing the right turbine wheel.

This is the turbo that caught my attention and sparked interest in this thread.

Garrett T3/60-1 with Stage III turbine wheel and 60-1 compressor wheel: atpturbo.com

Pretty much the turbo Ben listed.

Looks like a winner. I would do the divided housing / V-band exhaust side with 0.78 A/R for sure, even if I didn't have a divided manifold. V-band connection is so nice, and divided will work fine and resale value is higher. Also 0.78 A/R is peachy.

It's also half the price of the 3071r. I wouldn't mind saving some money. I already have a turbo timer anyways

the stage 3 turbine is not a good wheel ,do a t350 upgrade on that turbo.

If I were you I would do some research with a Precision Turbo dealer because there should be a new turbo from precision 5757 That's its basically same wheel specs and characteristics of a GT30 with the billet compressor wheel with the capability to produce up to 600whp....
