Thread: Best combo for high boost?

I am just wondering what everyones thoughts and suggestions are on this. I am about to begin a build on a block and have talked it over with a couple friends and forum members on this matter. My original cheap idea was to get a VE and pull the bottom end and swap everything from a Avenir bottom end im bout to pick up with a bad head so i can get a nice strong VVL/Boost going..or go with some nice 300zx pistons with gti-r rods with new main bearings. My other idea was just to just buy a clean Jdm motor and tear it apart and beef the **** out of the bottom end including bore/sleeve, but here is were i would like your guys ideas, what Pston,rods, and anything else needed to do this would you guys perfer? This block with be most likely holding a nice GT30R or a T3/T4 on high boost...i know its not needed to really beef up a Sr20 to hold these turbos and most of you will probly say to pick up an Avenir but i want this to be a reliable motor that will hold this power no problem and not blow easily!

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated!

careful with the 300zx pistons if you plan to rev to high RPM's. i know it's going to be a turbo motor so i'm assuming you won't be revving very high. but i say this because the pin boss on kojima's 200sx (N/A with thousands of dyno pulls and revving to high RPMs) broke and destroyed the motor which we believe is because it's a heavier piston. i know this probably wont affect you but just something precautionary.

Thanx man ..yeh if i decide to go that route, the motor will be boosted but as long as i can rev it to about 8.2 im straight, dont need anything higher than that with a nice 30R lol

well there are 2 ways to do it, the cheap way or the right way. obviously the right way isnt cheap. so that is up to you.

its no that there isnt a need to build up a bottom end with the sr20s, but most people cheap out and think since they have the ability to hold a good ammount of power why build them up..that is more or less the feeling i get behind it..

It has nothing to do with cheaping out. The sr20 bottom is stout, and 8 years ago in PHX we had a 500+ whp b13 on stock internals. It was built perfect, but held together for a long time with high boost runs every weekend.

Just refresh the bottom end if you wanna keep costs down. New rings and bearings and oil pump. When you disassmble the motor, pop the freeze plugs and clean all the crap out of the coolant passages and do you best to clean out all the oil galleys.

An sr with new rings, bearings, oil system and clean passages is very reliable at 400whp. I made 423whp on my s13 witrh full stock block, never an issue.

Yes, it is all about the tuning as long as the internas are on the good end of the tolerances. New rings and bearings with maybe a hone job will do that. Save the money for the bore hone rods pistons and get some cams with some nice injectors a z32 MAF and a GOOD TUNE!

i could not agree more. i am running stock bottom end and have seen them make over 500whp consistently. just make sure the bottom end is in good condition as fro20 said freshen it up and go from there.

but if you have the budget for it and plan to make really big power, shoot for the moon. just know that you have the stock bottom end as an option.

I agree with both you guys...i meant by cheap way by just replacing bearings and throwing in some Avenir/gti-r rods and pistons that you can pick up for a cheap price

But when i said more expensive way and what not, i meant by going all out and throwing in Eagle rods,weisco pistons,Ve oil pump,bearings, arp head studs, cometic headgasket and what not...

Either way i want the motor to hold 450+ with a good tune and hold it for street/track abuse...

If you want a really cheap and reliable build I say eagle rods with a good piston. A factory VET piston is pretty sweet stuff. Its not forged but it is a pretty awesome stock piston.
