Thanks for the compliments. I pulled rod bearing #1 just out of curiousity when I started to tear down the motor. No signs of damage or excessive heat. Used a flashlight to just overlook all other rod caps and didn't see any discoloration, so I should be just fine. Now it's a matter of finding out how to secure that fitting without it popping out again. It's press-in, but once you've pressed it in once or twice it doesn't have the same grip. I'm wondering if I should just epoxy it...
