Depends on the power goals and with what turbo....if we are talking about the 2871 and 12lbs I would choose the t3 0.63 for the friend and his sr16ve n1 of course with cam sprokets and meth injection to keep the backpressure and the egt down.

Any T3 wheel stage 1,2,3 and 5 will spool slower than the GT2871R with .86 turbine housing. This is old outdated crap.

Also I am amost 100 % sure that a T3 Turbine housing .63 AR and stage 1-3 wheel will mostlikely keep more heat in.

I was talking about a t3 turbine housing in a 2871 Andreas.

well you would want a T4 housing. that is the turbo i used a bb37 is a 2871r with the right housing to clear our blocks. at 12 psi on a bone stock sr20det i pulled 290 whp on a very conservative jwt ecu. on 20 psi i pulled 365 whp and 324tq. on the 20 psi pull the car was over 300 whp at 5k rpms. this turbo with s4's in my last (never dyno'd) setup would pull 20 psi boost at around 4k rpms tell me how that is lag? on the street i ran it at 12psi and that was full on at in the mid 3k rpm range. so fast that the first 3 gears on r compound tires was just smoke at full throttle. mind you 4 years ago when this turbo first came out it cost $1400 to get it built for a gtir mani.

Please note I said Turbine wheel. If you put a bigger compressor wheel on a GTIR it will turn into a crap.

At any given PSI the GT2871R will out power the GTIR turbo. I bet at 12 PSI the GT2871R will make 40-50 more WHP and have a much wider power band and hold the power longer which is needed for a high reving SR16VE.

So given that he is nit going to run more than 10-12 PSI of boost the GT2871R can do it more efficently and have less backpresure because of the way better turbine wheel.


Also people dont throw around numbers like a .86 will be laggy.

Disclaimer:- I really don't know much about turbocharging so if I get this wrong don't laugh at me too much. I'm here because I want to learn.

In order of most-laggy to least-laggy, assuming all are fitted to the same engine and everything is kept constant I'd say
T3 .82
T3 .63
T25 .86
T25 .64
But I'm not sure.

How'd I do? If I'm way off (highly likely), please explain what I've overlooked.

.86 is obviously going to be more laggy than a DE with it only being a 1.6 motor though isnt it

i know plenty about that wheel, and yes it is a fine piece and far superior to a gtir turbine. But i still think on a 1.6 it will not behave the way you are describing.

also your question is flawed as different turbine wheels will have a different result. eg, a true .63 t3 gt30 wheel vs chopped t2 .86...well there is no comparison the t3 item will rape it in spool

My question is not flawed because you can get a NS-111 wheel in each of those housings.

So, then with a NS-111 wheel in each of those hosuings which will be most responsive from most to less?

Spot on. The .86ar T2 is similar to the .63ar T3 on the inside of the Volute. But the T3 has a much bigger initial opening. Not sure how much smaller the t2 stuff on the inside is, but it is a bit smaller.

I should add that the spool time will change based on whether or not VE is being choked off. If you have too small of a housing it can make the turbo feel like a complete dog, and not want to spool. Kind of like having a puny exhaust on a turbo car. It is sort of a balancing act.
