Thread: Known cold plugs (NGK BKR7) with removable contact tip?

While I was N/A and using Honda CBR coil-on-plug I could find NGK spark plugs with removable contact tips that the coil packs would fit onto. Some car engines (BMW) and most/all motorcycles mount the plug wires or coil packs onto a tiny, threaded section on the spark plug. Other engines like the SR20 make use of the larger style contact tip.

I need a spark plug with a heat range similar to the BKR7s that fits properly into an SR20 engine and has the small contact tip, or a removable (threaded) tip like my old plugs (NGK BKR5s or what ever).

Is there a way to tell what the tip is like when perusing summit's web site? Dan Martin checked the local shops and couldn't find anything local.

I have a set of BKR7s right now that I'm going to modify by grinding the tips down (and maybe even threading them) but I thought I'd ask just in case someone could help.

Denso Iridium IK27 = heat range 9 in NGK
IK24 = 8 NGK
IK22 = 7 NGK

btw Denso is the only other plug i would run other than ngk.
All the hks plugs are made by Denso.
I am using 600rr coils on my ve-t

i believe all the tips of the plugs remove at least from what i have seen, they just come tightened on there, take a pair of small vice grips and remove them, they should come right off. Cuz there is an occasion where i have found them loose on my bkr7e's i usually just check them before i put them in to make sure they are tight. Give it a shot

I've done that a couple times to different plugs and each time it sheered the electrode off deep inside the plug and the entire electrode comes out. Plug is ruined. There's definitely two different varieties.


Interesting... Where do you get your BKR7E's and/or do you have a part number?

All of my NGK's that i have used the tips were removable, just use a pair of pliers and there you have it.

I have also gotten in the habit of checking to make sure they are tight, cause they usually aren't. Try it see what happens.

I have boxes and boxes of NGK plugs here without removable tips. Summit and the local auto parts stores are against me.

I always get mine from advanced auto.
