Had a discussion about a turbo...
So my buddy and I were talking about my upgrade to an SC6262, The thing is whether or not to do the ball bearing or journal. Now this turbo does come with the billet wheel so it will spool at a decent time for one of this size. I was just going to get the ball bearing but when talking to my buddy (who I do trust with my car building guidance A LOT) he said that I will only gain about 300 rpm with the ball bearing.

So I want to hear FACTS NOT OPINIONS about this subject

You stated the facts already. Ball bearing will spin better and have a little better spool characteristics by about 300 rpm. Personally if you are spending all the money why not just get the ball bearing.

the price difference is over 400 bucks. You can get a journal sc6262 for 900ish and the BB goes for 1300-1400. Over a 30% difference.

I forgot to add, the price difference is $400. I don't think thats particularly worth that much. Plus journal bearings can be rebuilt if needed

Edit:^^^ great minds think alike ha ha ha

yes, like we were saying go with the journal bearing turbo it will cost $400 less, and you can put that money into tuning or something else to get it to spool better

I guess I think differently from you. $900 is alot of money in the first place. $1300 is also alot of money so too. You might as well spend a little extra and get the best.

I would if it were say a garrett, but precision, holset, and BW are just getting really good without BB. Eh we'll see how she does

The biggest difference in spool will come from boost response. How fast does the boost build when you nail the throttle. There is a lot faster response with the bb turbos. Night and Day. I really like BB turbos, but you can get any of these turbos to spool by decent rpm. The boost response past the boost onset is what you improve mostly with a bb turbo.

The BB turbos require a lot less oil to operate, hence they usually have a smaller restrictor.

If you ran against a big V8 on the straight at a steady 4K rpm, and you both nail it at the same time, that V8 will pull away pretty hard until boost hits. On the track (circuit) you want to have brutal throttle response or that big turbo will make you extremely frustrated.

To each his own, if you are just drag racing the car get the journal bearing. Save a few bucks. But even though the journal can be rebuilt (under some circumstances) don't let that be your deciding factor. BB turbos as long as they are operated efficiently will outlast the journal bearing two fold.

I know how to take care of the turbo no problem. I just want to drag the car, and if the turbo was too fast the spool like my T28 I'd just lose traction again. Jeremy, the other reason I'm not as worried about the spool time is because its got a billet wheel. I don't know anyone else that has one so I want to see what a journal bearing is like and I'm young so I've got plenty of time to save up for a different one lol
