I think the 2871r in the .86 is a great all around turbo, being in the turbos efficeny range isnt a bad thing. I would rather be in the sweet spot almost all the time rather than having more lag and not being in the turbos effective efficency range. You will still have some headroom with the 2871, and you can also change to an external gate down the road to make a few more hp.
In the end you have to decide what fits your driving style, and what you want to do with the car. If its a street car i would say 2871 all day. If you are building an all out race car i would consider alot more options than just the t2 flanged turbos, there are plenty of good spooling turbos that make more power if not the same power than the 3071r for less money.
Just my .02
Its a street and track car. Most of the tme it will be on the street(5K ayear), but I would actually prefer alittle lag compared to my gt28r and some more topend. My goal atthe track is to run mid 11's @ 120mph+ and i think this turbo will definitely get me there pretty easily with the right tune and set-up.
And I really want to keep my gti-r manifold and that "stock look". If I was going with a t3 flanged turbo I would be looking for a nice holset hx35 , log mani, custom down-pipe and be done. Its just something about the stock heatshield look
