People are doing stuff that a few of us were doing 4 years ago and think its new, its retarded. I've always been impressed by what some of you guys have achieved, especially turbofreak with his old standard gtir motor and a set of cams

i'd say a lot of us guys in the uk have learned alot and got motivation from you guys on the sr forums as up until recently everything in the uk was 'tuner' lead. Its pushed alot of us to do things we probably wouldn't have. If you saw some of the specs for cars that make comparitively feck all power you'd p1ss your pants laughing at the amount of money some of these people have paid out.

I can understand the better 1/4 mile times in the states due to the tracks and slicks but between 'enthusiasts' in our 2 countries there will never be an agreement on power figures..lol..its the same on every forum i go on where theres both guys from the uk and the us on. Just weird how its so different

anyways,

Throwing a set of pistons in is considered a basic rebuild here, especially when you consider the exchange rate and how much we were getting stuff for up until recently. Shame thats gone down the pan now as theres a few bits i should've ordered months ago to finish my car

The first engine thats ready to go in mine will be on a 3582, i have a couple of sets of cams for it to mess about with, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Looks like I'll be purchasing a 2871r w/.86a/r, a set a jwt s3m's, and b15 or p11 tranny to hold the power! There goes my income taxes

Great thread guys. I am loving the great info I am getting from here

Well I see the RS is good 16-18 but thats not the same turbo as just the 28R is it?

Now as far as octane goes there is no need to run 110. Running to high of an octane will make the car slower. Always run the lowest octane needed to get the job done. To run 22 PSI you will need no more than 98-101 octane.

I have a little chart for boost and octane and it goes. 0-15 PSI 93-95 octane, 16-22 PSI 97-101 octane and 23-40 PSI 105-C16 octane

Oh is this what you were talking about? So 15 on pump and 22 on 100, nice info

LikeTheMovies, the GT28RS (AKA disco potato; AKA GT2860RS) is different from the turbo you're asking about which is the GT2860R I imagine.
Here's the map for the GT28RS that Andreas was saying is good around 16-18 psi:

I can see it looks happiest between 1.0 and 1.25 bar which is 14.5-18.1 psi.

Garrett actually has three types of GT2860R turbos listed. One of them actually has a ridiculous compressor map so I'm going to ignore it. The most sensible one is this one:

It too looks happiest at 1.0-1.25 bar (14.5-18.1 psi).
Hope that clears it up.

Nice info in here. I'll be giving you a call about this later Dre. Where did you get those octane numbers? Is that a standard for our motors? Or?????

Okay now that I look at those compressor maps much closer, even though they are labeled as different turbos, they look exactly the same. It would seem they use the exact same compressor side between these two turbos. The difference between the GT2860R and GT2860RS must be in the exhaust side, or maybe in the center section (bearings?). Or maybe even in the wheel construction material. Point is, I'm not a Garrett turbo expert, but as far as compressor efficiency goes, they look identical.
