T25 with T28 internals
Ok planning to do my very own DET swap. I will be getting a DET next year so saying that, I have read some people taking a stock T25 and putting T28 internals. Does the T25 with T28 = a T28? Does the T25 now push 15 psi easily? Why not just go T28, is there a difference really with a T25 with T28 internals and a T28

the T25 housing is much smaller than a T28. putting a T28 into a T25 housing will create alot of heat, but it will work. if it was free, I'd get it. If I have to pay, I'd look into something else.

The difference between the T25 and the T28 is the size of the compressor wheel. They both have the same exhaust side basically. For every compressor wheel (or exhaust wheel for that matter) the housing is made for that wheel, and that wheel only.
This means the idea of swapping internals of a turbo with different size wheels is a myth. The T28 compressor wheel will not fit in a T25 compressor housing. If you put the T28 compressor housing on to make everything fit, congratulations! You've just gone through a whole lot of ridiculousness just to come up with a T28 again.

They machine the T25 housing to let the T28 compressor wheel work. Seems like a waste of time and money. Just get a T28 or a S15 GT28R.

the GTIR turbine and compressor wheels are bigger than the T25.

I wanted to go from a T28 to a T25 on my new daily, so I bought a junk T25 to get rebuilt. When I sent it to G-pop Shop to be rebuilt, they said the turbine wheel was damaged and needed to be replaced. A new wheel would have bumped the rebuild cost up to about $550, which is a lot to sink into a T25 rebuild. And if I did nothing I was out the cost of the blown turbo, plus an "inspection fee" and shipping charges. In the end I decided to just spend a little extra for their T28 upgrade, which was $720 with return shipping. That includes machine work, replacing the entire center section, and replacing both wheels. It's not from a GTIR, but it's a Garrett center section. The plate # comes up as a GT25 on a John Deere, lol.

Anyhow, at stock boost I really can't tell any difference from the T28 to the T25/T28. I'm sure at higher boost levels a T28 would outperform the "Big T28" but it's fine for me.

There's a bunch of pictures in this thread:

I must have the T25 and T28 confused with the GT25 and GT28 (which do share the same turbine)?

Swiss, so you sent them a regular journal bearing turb0 and got back a Ball bearing one?
