The difference between journaled and ball bearing wont, or shouldn't make any peak HP differences. It will make a difference on how early you will receive that HP/Power or more correctly called Torque.

I have a 2.5" exhaust, with a stock STI muffler, so no creeps or spikes.

No, I'm not sure but I'd assume not. It came from Japan and seemed to be un-modified from whoever owned it. I'm running 3" turbo back w/3" Magnaflow muffler and 2xDynomax Bullet resonators. Very similar to Ben Fenner's exhaust.

As Vadim said, your exhaust & intercooler setup will be better than stock avenir stuff, causing the boost level to rise.

Do they sell Avenirs in NZ? How do you know they boost 7psi?

We get second-hand JDM imports into NZ, which means we can bring all the odd-ball stuff over, e.g. my 4x4 HNP11 Primera or my girl's P11 TE-V (VE, CVT-M6)

I've driven a stock W11 Avenir wagon.

Was it the W11 where you saw 7psi? Do they have a boost gauge in them?

Yeah it was the W11, it had an aftermarket boost gauge in it.

ahhh well that's even more interesting because Vadim has a W11. Looks like he's reading higher than stock as well if that's the case. He reads 9psi too.

@Vadim: Thoughts?

More information can be found here

Regarding 2 plug TPS. Mine was a W10 and came w/a 2 plug TPS so I think all Avenir motors came w/a 2 plug TPS, unless mine was in the cusp of the W10/W11 transition or something(late model W10). Also, the distributor I had was the same part # as my lowport '95 SR20 motor.

crazy...maybe mine was a late model W10 from 98 or something. Also, in response to the previous discussions about stock wastegate pressure, I was thinking maybe I'm seeing higher than usual stock boost pressure because my wastegate arm is a little tight. Had to clock that thing a little past where it would be stock and I think it tightened up the wastegate arm a bit.

Just thought I'd show you something about these hp numbers as they relate to the W10 and W11. The first thing is the most obvious, one is rated at 7psi the other at 9psi. Here's what happens at those levels. A 140 hp engine (sound familier?) when divided by 14.7 (atmosphere) comes to roughly 9.52
hp per pound of boost. So seven times 9.52= 66.6 add that to 140 and you get roughly 206 hp. Now let's do the numbers for the so called BB equiped engine. Start again with 140 (a normally asperated DE) and divide it by 14.7 and you still get 9.52 but now lets add just 2 more pounds of boost to our original equasion. So now NINE times 9.52 equals...wait for it...85.7 now we add that to the normaly asperated number of 140 (hp) and you get around 226hp! The BB turbo has nothing to do with the hp numbers, the boost level does. The bb turbo just gets you there a little faster. Now try the same thing, but see what would happen if you kept that wastegate closed just a little bit tighter (bb OR journal unit)...like say till around 14.7 psi. That's right, you potentialy double the original hp.
W10 or W11 who cares, because I'd just turn either of them up appropriately, I'd just want the fresher engine of the two! Then yes of course, I'd want what every white boy on the lake wants...a bb turbo lol.

The biggest reason I wanted an Avenir motor over any bluebird motor is because it came out of a station wagon and there were more automatics, meaning somoene's mom drove it and never abused it. BB motors are more common for abuse because of the popularity and they were more commonly made in 5 speed. The W10 motor I have was an automatic and babied, I often wonder if the turbo went into boost alot when I drive it because it's so alive!!!

It's like buying an SE-R from an old lady as opposed to buying one from a 21 yr old you know the old lady did not abuse the power and the kid beat the crap out of it...
