Filling Nitrous bottles
There is a shop in my area that completely empties the bottle before filling them. Does this need to be done or is it ok to just top it off every time the bottle is out of range.

OMG....

He either is getting all the air out or chilling the bottle quickly so it can get refilled easier/quicker. My guy tops it off when Ive only used 2 or 3 lbs and I go to refill. Sometimes he'll put the bottle in a freezer for a while. Other times if im near empty he'll tell me to flip the bottle upside down open it and hold on. LOL

That reminded me of a story when a guy knocked over a welding tank and broke off the nozzle.....I bet you can picture what happened next....Never mind you would have to see with your own eyes...

The only time you REALLY need to empty it is if the nitrous has been in the bottle for a long time. It can sort of go "stale" and lose it's effectiveness.

I fill my own bottle's and do them for our customers as well. Freezing the bottle makes the transfer of nitrous alot quicker and easier. Nitrous is VERY cold, so naturally it moves towards the coldest container faster. You can actually fill a bottle till it stops, refreeze it, and the fill it again to get more in it lol. I normally put around 11lbs in my bottle, but I have a NOS bottle with a super high flow valve that I've put over 13lbs in before lol.

ive never heard of nitrous going "stale".

as far as having to empty the bottle, its to lower temp in the cyl. so cascading is possible. you dont necessarily have to completely empty the bottle but it will keep you from over filling the cyl. over filling the bottle will give you higher pressure but it will make it more likely your burst disc will blow.

True. That's why you need to keep an eye on bottle pressure. My safety disc will pop at 3000 psi and 635° . Both of my bottles usually get 12-13 pounds in. Pressure spikes to 1400-1500 psi with the bottle heater on and the bottle warm.

Nitrous doesn't go stale.

your tank will pop if at any point in its life it gets heated to 350 degrees not only your safety. good reason why not to get your aluminum cylinders powder coated. ive made junk from a few tanks that customers have brought to me.
