5th Gear pop out
So I'm taking advantage of dash getting worked on and not having some of the features available (SEARCH lol)

I've been doing some homework for a few months now since finding a replacement transmission is going to be has been pretty tough (the first one I bought turned out to be non-lsd and yes I know it'll work as long as I use non-lsd driver axle...anything else?)

A buddy of mine picked a b13 transmission a few years ago and went to put it in his car but realized the threads for the rear motor mount were stripped out. He sold the car and forgot he ever had it, until recently and offered it to me for free (thanks boo lol) I had been thinking about getting the holes filled then drilled and reinforced but I didn't think it would be worth doing all that work to a transmission with the internals possibly being just as bad as the one I intended to replace.

With that being said I decided to read up a bit on '5th gear pop out' repairs with the few threads with working pictures (thanks Photobucket lol) and cracked it open.

I was surprised as to how simple and straight forward it was getting the one half off. This is going to be the first time I attempt the repair but I'm confident enough to tackle it. I'll be going to my dads shop sometime in the Spring/Summer with the rebuild kit from Greg over at Gspec but wanted to get some input from you folks in the meantime.

I took some pictures of the gear stacks in random orientation/angles since at this point I was mostly looking at the few pictures I had seen and used my imagination for the pictures with dead links in some of the other threads.

It's clear to me now that the stack on the left is 1st-Reverse-2nd-3rd-4th-5th in the order from bottom up

I don't know if you will be able to zoom in, but if you can (which I doubt from this one picture alone) from your experience would you say the 5th gear looks usable? Also, I forget which gear selector fork I had removed when these pictures were taken but it looks brand new. Typically you would see the cavity section where the cap goes in bent out of shape in one way or another. Obviously the other forks should be inspected also but figured I would put something together to have some sort of story line going with my 5th gear pop out experience/experiment lol. I might just end up keeping it for spare parts and to practice the break down process.

I'm hoping to get more pictures tomorrow and possibly even take it apart more as if i was repairing the one from my car.

This is one of the most detailed write ups i was able to find which got my fingers itching so thank you wherever NissanEgg may be
NissanEgg thread

Any tips or suggestions on how I can make use of this transmission would be greatly appreciated and I hope this thread didn't waste too much of your time lol

The 5th def has some wear on it but is probably usable for a while longer.. whats the collar look like? The current top side should look all fresh and the bottom is prob showing some ware but thats why u flip it over..

Whats the bottom of the fork look like where its all C shaped?

Love how Nissan never officially acknowledged the problem, as most 5th gears went out well after the factory warranty period

First off, I'm sorry this tutorial is missing so many pictures. One day I will replace them.
How to recognise and repair 5th gear pop-out in a B13 or B14 transmission.

We really need a better picture. First, we want to determine if that is the older style gear or the new one. The new one has more distance between the helical gear teeth and the vertical dog teeth (the actual helical gear was made thinner to accomplish this). See here, it is pretty subtle.

To determine how much life the gear has on the dog teeth, we'd need much better pictures of the dog teeth themselves. A little minor wear is okay, but decent chunks missing mean it is totally useless. You want generally sharp edges and cuts on the teeth. If things look rounded over everywhere, it's toast.

If you haven't purchased the repair kit yet, I would recommend you only get the parts you want and need. If you don't need the fork, don't get it.

Thanks, I will add it to my list of alternative How-Tos.

Honestly, I think the best move for someone with 5th gear pop-out (but an otherwise good transmission they like) is to refurbish that known transmission with new seals, new switches, and a new 5th input gear (with synchronizer and selector collar). That means this other transmission you have, while good for taking apart and inspecting and getting yourself familiar with the inside, isn't terribly useful if you ask me. I would keep it for spare parts at best. Or sell it on when you're finished fixing your current transmission.

OP - you don't really *need* the entire Gspec repair kit, just a few things from it, but its a good kit and has everything. I used it once.

BTW glad you're doing it yourself because a shop will charge a fortune for this. 5th gear went on my friend's all stock 91 SE-R a few years ago.... $1,400 to fix.

My spare trans needs the kit too and Raees SR20NYC works at nissan and is the process of putting together one. Plus he's actually on this forum and in chat regularly...hit him up

Ben-
thank you for your input. I ended up going to the shop and doing my bushings but didn't get a chance like I was hoping to take more pictures.

I'm still throwing ideas around before I pull the trigger on ordering the kit. I'd love to just rebuild/refurbish the transmission I currently have in the car since I know it works fine otherwise. The reason I'm a bit hesitant is because I don't to do it in a rush if I'm able to do it with this other transmission and just do a simple transmission swap since it's currently my daily. The more I can minimize risk in being stuck without a car the better lol

I've even considered flipping the sleeve and throwing it in the car after I get the holes fixed and take my time refurbishing the one I'm currently driving around with since I know it's in pretty good condition other than the 5th gear.

I'll keep you guys updated with pictures once I can get some.

Storm-
Yeah, a few shops I called over the summer said they would need at least a bit so they could take it apart and diagnose it. Having this spare transmission is definitely a huge plus. Just gotta figure what would be the smartest and most cost effective way to go about it. I'm lucky my father has a shop I could use but it sinks it's about 30-45minute drive, having a toddler definitely ain't helping either lol

1fast-
That's right I forgot he's the Nissan parts plug lol. I'll give caps a pm when I narrow down my plan. Thanks! Without looking at the transmission I think my best option might end up being too get the holes fixed and making this extra one functional while I give my original one an overhaul of some sort.

So i finally had the chance to break it open and it's waiting to get dropped off on Saturday to have the threads for the rear motor mount bracket fixed.

Just going to go ahead and upload the pictures I took along the way.

Aside from getting the threads fixed I'm also going to see if he can weld it shut for me while its there.

Top of the slider that could potentially be flipped and used

Bottom of the slider (you can see the tip to some of the teeth are somewhat ground down)

Top side from a different angle

Bottom side from different angle

Top side from different angle

Bottom side from a different angle

At this point its clearly obvious that the top side of the slider is still new (almost as expected) so if i decide to use it i would end up just flipping.

The synchro has 3 sets of teeth so each of the following are pictures of each set. You can see some damage but not too much, this i would like to replace regardless. I haven't gone crazy with searching where I can find individual synchro yet but i'm hoping I can.

Random picture i took from the top view with the slider removed and other sections showing where the small and large springs go along with which bolts go where to help with the reassembling process.

Moving on over to 5th gear itself

From these next couple pictures you can see similar damage found with the synchro and slider. Again, this I intend in replacing.....as long as I can find it lol

I completely goofed and forgot to take pictures of the shifter forks with he caps. However they did not seem to show any or much wear so I'm on the fence about replacing them or keeping and reusing them.

As far as internals from a b14 non LSD transmission, can anything be used in this b13 transmission. Could I use the gear stack (or atlas 5th gear from it)?

Thanks for any advice or tips

-Martin

Storm-
Thank you (feel free to use the pictures in any other threads as replacements or extras)

I got this in the mail the other day! (should be installing in a few weeks)

I forgot to take a picture to see which way these tabs were facing. Can someone confirm the center 'hump' goes facing outward when placed inside the hub/sleeve?

Also, will it matter how I mount the 2 springs holding the tabs along as all 3 tabs are touching the spring or is there a certain direction the ends of the springs are placed?

(1 of 3 tabs mentioned above)

(new springs i got which go along with the tabs in question)

TIA guys!
