I drilled my flywheel to run the bigger GTI-R bolts with zero issues since 1998. Now the bigger bolts might throw off the balance compared to the smaller bolts. You can always just change all of them to the larger bolts and drill all the holes on the flywheel and that should balance everything out.

That's a good idea, a lot of work but the best suggestion so far.

If you are going to use an insert, use a keen sert or time sert. Fuck a helicoil.

Swap the crank. Whatever you do will never be balanced, and I sure as hell wouldn't not be confident in any repair in that area. If for any reason it works loose it will cause some serious damage.

If it were me I would just pick another motor up before swaping crank/rods/pistons. If you have a pick'n'pull and catch 50% off day engines are like $70 with $30 core. You would pay more than that buying bearings and rebalancing.
