Thread: Speed sensor removal issue

Hi all,

I attempted to remove the manual speed sensor from the spare B13 trans to replace it with an electronic unit for the B14 and needless to say it didn't go as planned.... Any suggestions?

Soak it in PB blaster and keep banging away at it I suppose.

try to get under it. pb blaster for sure, maybe a hot air gun also. but yea some hammer time will be needed.

to be fair, im not even sure what im looking at. what is that rusted as fawk looking thing on top? did you break the cable?

Pb blaster as channel locks works.I've done it a few times. Twist and pull up.

I didn't break it, but the cable was broken like that when I picked up the trans. I did break the lip on the sensor when I attempted to remove it, it's in there good. I don't care if the manual sensor goes to waste, I just don't want to damage the internals.

I looked but dont have the pic anymore(wish I did)...but heres what I did in your dilemma.

Drill a hole in the sensor body from the top(I used 3/16) and screwed a 2" long lag bolt into it so I could use a claw hammer to pull it out.
Thiat was my last resort after trying to pry and grab it with channellocks and vicegrips...they just chewed up the aluminum so bad I couldnt grab it anymore...so thats what I came up with...and it worked perfectly.

NOTE you gotta make sure to drill your hole at an angle that doesnt harm the case and dont go too deep just enough to get a good bite to pull on.Just look at it real good before drilling.

This is by far the best advice. I would add using a propane torch to heat it up. A heat gun will not be effective as aluminum dissipates heat very quickly. When it is hot, spray pb blaster around the base of the sensor then allow it to cool.
