If you're going to buy a B14 transmission why bother swapping parts. just install the whole tranny, unless you can find a b14 tranny with a cracked case, another common problem.

I had the same problem with 5th gear and lived with it a while but couldn't take the high RPMs on the highway or the poor gas mileage.

I got a 2001 P11 transmission and switched over to a hydraulic clutch. Not one regret, I could never go back. Next on my wish list is a 6 speed swap.

no B13, B14, or p10 transmissions have the provisions for the P11 transmission mount.. therefore neither of those will bolt up to the p11 chassis...

Your dead on, most of the transmissions I have flipped the collar on last about 2yrs of daily driving before pop out returns. not bad for a free fix but keep in mind if the gear is in bad shape this cheater fix wont correct the issue. Sounds like Benfenner has done this trick before......haha

I'm going to call the shop to see if there is anything that they can do. I told them to check the 94 transmission before installing it to make sure that it was in good condition and they said it was. They even told me of a clip that was bad and needed to be replaced.

Would the gear and synchro that Courtesy Nissan sells in their popout kit for a 91-94 SE-R be what I would need? How hard is it to replace the 5th gear and synchro if I were to get new ones? I am an ok mechanic, but have never tried to do anything like this. I might not be able to get to it until the 1st week of September. I have a week vacation coming up, so I guess I'll have to drive it like that until I get it fixed or longer.

Would driving it at higher rpms in 4th on the freeway put any unnecessary strain on the motor?

Thank you for the help and link!!

David ,

What's up bud , sorry to hear about your troubles . Been there , i suggest reach out to Greg V and he can get you the 5th gear pop out kit , that's where I got mine .

I did this on my white B14 and till this day the tranny shifts smooth.

Contact Gio , he can do the pop out kit install for you , His cell is on his sig,He is a good honest dude.

1) It is not that easy to replace. It's not crazy difficult, but it's definitely one of the more advanced procedures for our cars. If you can do a clutch job you can probably do this.

2) You will see a decrease in MPG when driving in 4th gear for extended periods of time. It also can potentially exacerbate any mechanical issues the vehicle had before hand. If you're coolant system isn't up to par, you could me be more likely to overheat staying at a higher RPM for a longer period of time, it also can put more stress on other elements of the drivetrain. Make sure your oil is semi-fresh and up to correct levels if you're not going to change it and keep an eye on it.

I agree, it's not a simple job, but if you can do a clutch job you can do this. CLICK THE HOW-TO LINK I GAVE YOU IF YOU WANT TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT IS INVOLVED. SERIOUSLY. CLICK THE DAMN LINK.

Also agree with calling Greg Vogel to buy the parts. http://www.gspec.com/t-contact.aspx

Nope, just an educated guess based on how much material would be remaining.

JWW tried that in one of his transmissions that had pop out... it only lasted a couple weeks before it was popping out again.

Bob (local guy to me) got popout in his NX and he got the minimum parts from Gregv (not entire popout kit) and we installed the parts in his trans in about 2 hours... shouldnt taken that long but those damn springs and 3 metal bars under the synchro were a bitch.

I did open the link when you posted it. It looks pretty simple the way you detail and describe it, but for a novice just because it looks simple doesn't mean that it is. Sorry if it sounded like I did not open the link.

I managed to remove my engine when it blew out a couple of years ago from the top of the car by myself instead of out the bottom and had some help swapping the JDM engine in. So I guess that I should be able to do this.

I am going to look for Gio and send him a message on how much he would charge just in case. I haven't found him yet, but I hope he's local.

Thank you all for your help!!

I lived with it for a while in my 93 sentra. But i had almost never saw 5th. But.... if someone can correct me if I'm wrong... this was in 2001 2002. I remember that I could just hold the shifter in gear as i drove and it was fine until i let go....it would pop out.. so if you really need to be in 5th you still can. Just hold it in gear as you drive.

I've read that doing this damages the shift fork. I've already bought everything I need to fix this. I had to go with Courtesy Nissan instead of Greg V because they had everything in stock and I'm only about 20 minutes from them...it was going to take more than a week if I would have gone with Greg V.

Thank you all for your input!!
