Broken hub... cause?
'95 200sx se-r

Heard a horrible grinding noise coming from up front. Brought car in to get diagnosed and drivers side wheel bearing was shot and the hub was broken (see pics). Had to get hub replaced and had both side wheel bearings replaced. Just wondering what would cause the hub to go bad like this? The car has 206K miles, so maybe old age? Or would putting a set of cheap drop springs on agitate such an old car?

Age and Fatigue... if the bearings go bad and wear on the hub, bam... you get more destruction.

that had to be let go for a realllyy long time to destroy it like that. only thing holding that together was hopes and dreams and an axle nut

Agreed‒age, fatigue, heat from the bad bearing, etc.
Maybe loose lug nuts too...

Yeah, that axle nut was holding on for dear life. That bearing was t-t-t-t-toasted way before this happened. The axle must have been wobbling hard enough to knock into the hub itself, causing it to crack.

Someone told me it looked like they tried to press the bearing out without taking the snap ring off first. Hope the mechanic didn't F up and make me pay for it.....

For it to look like your pic, it had to be making noise for a while. If you took it right in after hearing that noise, then it does sound like the mechanic f'd that up on you, but doubt they'd fess up to it anyway.
