Assuming all the same factors. Same car, same driver, same tranny, same conditions, same redline. The DE would probably win the 1/8th, the VE would probably win the 1/4, of course, the VE might be limited in power if it's bound to a lower redline.
Keep in mind, something that has a higher torque number probably has a broader and more usable powerband. Something with a lower torque number but high horsepower may not have as usable of a powerband.
Taking my 260hp/240tq VQ. I'm making almost full torque (200+ft-lbs) from 2200rpm till redline.
Taking my 165hp/130tq S5-SR. I was only making torque between 4500 and 7200RPM on a 8500RPM redline.
