Weird man. I know 1 very prominent member uses them constantly for various work so I am obviously getting mixed feelings from both sides of the fence....
I'm guessing that would be me. Here is what I can say about Mark, Brian, and OEM from personal experience. My first exposure was when they first appeared on the forum back in January of 2009. They were looking for someone to test fit an exhaust for a B13. I called Brian and explained that he would need 2 different exhausts for the B13 as the rear sections of NX and Sentra are different. I ended up getting the exhaust for the NX, and it needed some slight changes. Those were made and a new exhaust was sent out. Fitment was much improved and I was happy with the exhaust. When I needed a 3" exhaust for my SE-R, I got one from OEM. Fitment was good, but not perfect. I was able to make a few minor adjustments and again I was happy.
Shortly after joining our community, Brian posted asking for ideas for things that people would like to have. One of the first things to come up was headers. Someone suggested something like the ASP budget header, but for less money. Brian made a big mistake in saying they would try and get one and make a copy. If you missed it, is was a major firestorm. I had only known Brian for a few weeks at the time and I called him as soon as I saw the thread. I strongly urged him to stay out of the header business. You see, we as a community will protect our own. It was a known fact that Charles had done a ton of R&D on his headers, and it would be wrong to use his work for your profit. Brian agreed and never brought up headers again.
I have "loaned" several of my cars to OEM for months at a time for fabrication & test fitting of new products including intakes, fender braces, control arms, strut tower braces, camber plates, and now even carbon fiber pieces. A lot of the products OEM has brought to market fill a void that we, as owners of 15-20 year old cars, have a need for. Not everyone (yours truly at the head of the list) has fabrication skills or even access to the equipment required to build VE throttle brackets and suspension pieces. Mark has made mistakes in some of the pieces he has made, but in MY experience he has always been willing to make changes to make me as a customer happy.
As many here know, I organized the 2009 convention in Savannah. The trophies we presented at the car show were made by Brian at Focused Light Engraving. He did imho, a great job. So, to try and clear up any confusion Brian (bluebomber) and Mark (Overkill) are brothers who operate 2 businesses in Orlando, FL. Mark is OEM and he has 1 guy who supports him in general shop duties and 1 other guy who does the carbon fiber work. At this point that's it. Brian runs FLE and assists Mark administratively as needed. I called them late last night trying to point them to this thread. This morning I see Brian defending his brother, who is being needlessly bashed as far as I am concerned. In his shoes I can see myself doing the same.
In the last year I have seen 1 very good friend (Charles) give up on this community because he was tired of the BS you guys are willing to shovel. He spent many hours on the dyno, trying to bring a better header to the market and what did he get? Bashed in numerous threads because "an SSAC is just as good and it's cheaper". Good luck getting anything from Charles unless you know him personally because he is gone.
I will continue to work with Mark and Brian for my personal cars because I trust them, something that is hard to come by these days. And I will whole heartedly recommend them to anyone who asks me my opinion.
Sadly, I know I wouldn't blame them if they gave up on the SR community. And if they do, you've got to ask yourself one question.
Who is going to be willing to do this kind of work in the future?
