Although a bend in the velocity stack will work, Ideally you want anything in front of the butterfly to be as straight as possible. Anything after that is ok with any bends according to Mike Kojima. Having a bend before the butterfly will not allow FULL air passage as the butterflies open and only flow through the outside bend and not the inside of the bend. This was tested with smoke while the air was sucked in, no smoke went in through the inside bend resulting in lack of air.
