Don't know about you guys but 3rd or 4th on a 5spd doesn't change much other than the speed the car is doing on the dyno.

well there is a little thing called ratios that are different in all automotive manual transmissions. in a 5spd transmission there are 5 different gear ratios. on about 90% of all manual 5spds there is a ratio of 1:1 on 4th gear. this means that the motor is spinning the wheels at the speed of the final drive which is the actual final drive ratio. a dyno records speed, rpm and time. the amount of time it takes to reach maximum rpm in 3rd gear is a much faster time then 4th gear. therfore the time measurement is off. the numbers will be higher in 3rd. every car will have a different number depending on the gear ratio. the purpose of a dyno is to find out how much horsepower your engine is making and the most accurate way is removing all the drive train. since you cant just remove your transmission and or diff you need to eliminate as much as you can by running it as direct drive.

whatever, i read on this one forum that 1st gear is the best for dyno pulls so i always use that.

From my experience with the dyno 3rd to 4th makes little difference on the Dyno Jet. 4th gear in a N/A car running it up would be a waste of time and gas. What gear do you dyno a 6 spd? 5th gear?

you do a dyno pull in what ever gear is or is as close to 1:1. on 6spds it depends on if they have put a gear between 1st and 2nd or if they have made a double over drive ect.. on a dyno get you do it in 1:1 cause the Air fuel ratio is much more acurate esspecially if it doesnt have an eddy current.

when dealing with cars, doing it the right was is much better then doing it the faster way. i dont think any car owner is worried about wasting another 1480cc of fuel or in other words .4 gallons or $1.30. ive used whole tanks of gas tuning and ive never once heard i wish you would have used less gas.
