Thread: caliper pin + brake clips?

hey was wondering what grease to use? last time i used permatex synthetic grease . i think it may have been expired because i remember it was brown . i went to auto zone and looked for the caliper grease again and it was more of a green color.

i'm doing the front brakes again ... i forgot , but when i push the piston back in does the E- brake have to be on or off?

also i put the grease on these , http://www.rockauto.com/info/27/H15748A-1.jpg was that ok, or was it better to put it on the pads ... along the ears / sides?

Grease does not "expire". However, grease for the brakes should be for special high temperature applications. Autozone sells a small packet for brakes for about a buck. It is enough to do both sides. You apply it to the pins and also to the contact surfaces between the pads and the caliper. On one side, it goes on the piston surface. On the other side, you can spread it on the back of the shim. This helps to prevent squeal. When you do the front brakes, the hand brake is not involved, so it does not matter if it is on or off. If you only jack up the front, the hand brake should be on to prevent the car from rolling. Support the car on stands. Don't just use a jack.

so i hear some weird scuffing sound coming from the passenger side , not sure what it is. the guide pin are not sticking, because i greased the hell out of them, but read that the retainer clips actually have a left and right hand side of putting them on? i can stick my finger between the pads on the driver side, but not on the passenger side. one has more space between the caliper and the rotor.

check the dust shield around the rotor you might have bent it

also drilled or slotted rotors both can have this quality if the rotor dust shields are not bent. Nature of the beast kinda.

Just an update the noise disappeared . I guess it was the break in period of the brakes, but not sure why the last time I changed my brakes it still had the same sound emitting after a few months of driving.

The problem of the brake caliper on the passenger side still not having enough clearance from the brake rotor is still there ... it looks like if the brakes wear down a cm more the brake caliper will actually touch the rotor, as you can see in the picture above. I changed the retainer clips but it's still as seen in the picture.

I keep a tube of Mobil 1 synthetic grease around and most every time I have any brake caliper pins removed I dip them in that grease before I reinstall them.

I think i know why there's not enough clearance between the rotor and brake caliper. i bought wagner brake parts and it came with new brake retainer clips.I installed them, and i think that's why there's not much clearance. i bought Wagner REAR brakes and it came with the brake clips. i went to my mechanic to get them installed (i was lazy and didn't want to do it myself), but they didn't fit because the brake clips would not sit into the caliper. also the brake pads ears were longer too. i called rockauto and they said that wagner tweaks their products to fit different cars. I bought 02 brake pads from autozone and they fit in there ,so everything's ok--ish for the rear part.

i threw away the OEM brake retainer clips for the front when i installed the wanger brakes the first time around last year, and decided to put another set in because some noise from the front wouldn't go away. the second time around the noise stopped, but the noise came back again. even though im not pressing on the brakes it still sounds like the brakes are in action. (It has the sound of brakes being pressed on/used , think of you scraping the brakes on the ground). the driver-side rotor is shiny clean and ok, but the passenger side is dirty from i guess brake dust. i've cleaned it before again and again but it keeps coming back after a couple blocks of driving.

Also would it matter if the caliper guide/slide pin go in either of the holes? or do they have to be installed in a certain order? one has that rubber boot on it and the other doesn't . http://www.febestpanamerica.com/images/Photos/0274-N15F.jpg . http://www.febestpanamerica.com/images/Photos/0274-Y61R.jpg <-- i have this model of the pin but the boot is sorta ripped. i wanna replace it but i can't find the boot only, of it.
