If you have any noticeable slop in the spindle movement chances are it's ruined. The hubs on the other hand will never get worn, the outer race of the bearing rests on them and they don't rotate

^^ you may have your terminology backwards. The hub (part that wheel studs are attached to) commonly wears down when you srive on bad wheel bearings and the spindle (part where the strut, tie rod, ball joint, caliper bracket mount to) dont usually wear out.
