Did you replace the paper gaskets that go between the top mount of the strut and the chassis? Also are the rubber bushing that sit on the top and bottom of the spring in good condition?

Alrighty update - so the metal backing plate (not sure what it's called) and the pins were bent and needed to be fixed. Drove 2800km this past week and a bit and not a single groan at all. Car's good, now I have to figure out why I smell oil when I accelerate hard or when the car starts.
