Thread: Swapping GC coils to new strut bodies.

Hey all;

I need to remove the Ground Control coils and replace the struts.

1) How to pull them off? What tools, what do you do etc.? I've done this before but it was years ago.

2) How to re-install. I recall destroying the rubber material inside the threaded tube when I removed the coils, but then I sold them 'as is' so never re-installed. I was thinking of using rubber from a screen kit that I happen to have but also maybe some gasket maker.... ??? Is this where the duct tape comes in?

My searches turned up mostly 4S threads and technical questions about spring rates etc. So please if you've done this before take a little time to weigh in.

depends on how it was installed. if the spring perch was cut and then hammered into to hold the sleeves, you would need to find a way to pry the perches out.

if it was slide onto the strut housing, most people use duct tape to keep it from rattling. if that is the case, spray some wd40 between the sleeves and housing. let is sit and it SHOULD slide off. if not a little persuasion from a rubber mallet should do it.

That's the perfect explanation. Thanks. They were on with the original rubber 0-rings but only two in each one. It was mostly build up dirt holding things up.

Since I don't keep WD-40 PB blaster loosened things up just fine. The first one came off in 15 minutes just fine with some help from a small and medium pry bar. But the second was a total PITA. So for the rears I sprayed it really good and let it set up for almost two hours. Those slid off like butter.

The rears were definitely on cock-eyed so the install will be really careful. You think Gorilla tape is good to reset them? That's the next step.
