Thread: Rear swaybar bracket failure

Tonight I was under my B13 SE-R with Progress adjustable rear swaybar, and noticed the driver's side swaybar bracket was on its way to shearing itself in half. The passenger side bracket showed no deflection or damage, but the driver's side had twisted repeatedly over time to the point of splitting the metal.

I've had the Progress rear bar for six years or more, and have done a fair number of autocrosses and a few trackdays. It was ridden pretty hard for years with the stock rear bar, too.

Anyone else had this problem? Any solutions to share? Looks like I need to find a replacement and reinforce it.

Boy are you bringing back memories! The exact thing happened to me shortly after buying my car. It was the driver's side, and this was with a stock rear swaybar. Mine was a bit worse than yours. Sort of a rusted area that got really bad and tore. That piece can be bolted on, so just get a new one from Greg V if they are still available, or get a used one from pretty much anywhere. I don't think reinforcement is necessary. It should last you plenty long enough even with the stiffer progress bar.

Unfortunately, the new route looks to be closed for good.

If Greg doesn't have a used one on hand, there should be some in junkyards or available for plucking on the forums. Once I get one in better shape, I'll see if I can fit a piece of U-channel to sandwich back there and better distribute the loading at the bolt points.

For those who haven't broken this bracket, I'm betting it's still flexing under heavy cornering forces and reducing the effectiveness of the rear swaybar.

For sure reinforce it. Sway bar mounts are a common failure point on alot of cars.

This will do for now.
