Definitely wait and see what the welding teacher says. Auto body welding and structural welding are two entirely different things.

Have the welding teacher weld them. IMHO have them TIG welded properly. If the welding teacher can't TIG, then find someone who can. Anyone with any kind of welding back ground would tell you flux core is not suited for this at all. These cannot crack or break ever.

They are the only thing holding up the front of the car. If they were to fail, the front suspension will instantly be ripped out of the front of the car. It will then get caught underneath the car as you will most likely have it less than 2" off the ground. Things will not go well from there.

Good luck, and make sure they are safe before putting them even next to your car.

I will also note that you will eventually need to do something about the rear of the car as well. There are 4 total arms back there (plus 2 trailing arms) that you will need to do something with. Why not start on those first? There is way less weight back there, and there are 4 to get your practice on.

I fully appreciate the knowledge that you are sharing with our young friend.

It is worse than you think, you misread his statement. The Teacher told him to inspect them twice a week. Which is four (4) times as often as you have stated.

I will never, ever (ever) bolt anything onto my vehicle that I need to inspect twice a week (every 3.5-days) to make sure it does not look like it is going to fail. That thought alone is preposterous, ludicrous, inconceivable.

also if he is such a great welder and an amazing welding educator why is he teaching at a local community college?

if you get paid well would you work in there? i bet every one would!! also what about a community college? just because it a community, not a state or uc doesn't mean that he cant teach in there. every college is that same just different name.

So your auto body teacher told you these arms were "tacked" ok? Or was it the welding teacher? I hope it was the auto body teacher because if it was the welding instructor he shouldn't have a job. Anyone who tells you they should be fine, just keep checking them every week isn't sure about anything. If he was sure he would tell you to put them on and not worry. When a weld breaks, it is just going to let go, it won't be something that slowly happens that you will be able to see unless you catch it at the exact right time. Remember to walk before you run. I have seen many ASE certified techs that don't know anything about fabricating and some have questionable repair & trouble shooting skills. It means they put in their 2 years time and passed a test. There are 3 hard ASE tests, engine performance, electrical and the auto trans test. Engine mechanical can be confusing if you don't have experience building engines. We are not trying to flame you, we are here to help.
