Thread: Aluminum vs. Steel lugnuts

Obviously aluminum will be lighter,but what are the other differences to consider?
I am in FL so rust is not really an issue.
It seems like the steel would hold up to impact sockets and/or multiple removals a little better than aluminum.
Also,will the aluminum strip out easier,or loosen up easier while driving hard(like on the track)
Please post your opinions on both ...
1.)Spirited Daily Driver/occasional Autocrosser
2.)Dedicated track car.
What do you prefer,and why?

It seems like all the extended lugs arent threaded all the way,whats up with that

If I wanted to go light, I'd go titanium. I got fed up with aluminum threaded stuff on important components a long time ago. Especially on high traffic areas like lug nuts. I wish our spark plugs threaded into steel inserts. I wish our transmission mounts bolted to steel inserts in the transmission. I wouldn't add aluminum threaded things to my car if I couldn't help it.

Extended lugs aren't threaded all the way because you always want the nut threads to fail before the bolt/stud shank or threads. It's a fastener thing.

dont buy cheap ones. ive been using aluminum lugs for about two years. never had any come loose. make sure you are using taper wheels if you have taper lug nuts, or conical with conical. i always torque my wheels. never use an impact on them. i have titek lugs. daily driver. some track use.

also make sure you get 12x1.25. nissan and subaru use that thread pitch while most other cars are 12x1.5

I have used aluminum nuts for several years and switched back to steel this year. The aluminum lug nuts were starting to show definite signs of wear after many on/off cycles (this is on my track cars). I went with the Blox steel extended length lug nuts as replacements.

Steel. If I can't use an impact wrench on them they are worthless. ESPECIALLY when you will be taking your wheels on and off frequently!

bumping this thread because I need to get some open ended lugs soon.
They need to be tuner style due to clearance around the nuts being tight.It will need a thinwall spline type socket most likely.
Still looking for some input from anyone else who cares to comment
