Thread: Brakes Are Not Grabbing like they should

Hey Guys. I've come across an Issue with My NX. Its been sitting for 5-6 years up until recently. Therefore I'm not very familiar of what problems it had prior to being parked. Anyhow I just recently replaced the disks, and put on new pads.

I bled the system and it now has fresh brake fluid.

The issue I'm running into is that the brakes feel slow to react. I can get the car to stop but it takes longer than it should. The pedal is firm which I expected since I have already bled the lines.

I have to press the pedal firmer than what is normal for it to come to a stop. My attempts have just been around 15-20 mph. I haven't attempted higher speed stops yet.

With some pads you have to follow a specific break-in procedure. Check and see what is required for your pads.

Aside from breaking in the pads properly . When you replaced the brakes did you go over all the hardware like slide bolts and grease them ect ect .. Some times they rust and freeze and the rubber isolator on the pins swell up and you wind up with brake fade like symptoms or have to pump the peddle to get them to work or uneven pad wear . Also do the pistons move in and out freely . Just some suggestions

your brake booster might be bad

I threw some Autozone Duralast pads on. Using O'reillys brand Dot 3 fluid. I greased the slide pins but I'm not sure if the grease I used was appropriate. IT says its safe for rubber parts but it just did not feel slick. It felt too sticky like it would not allow for a nice sliding action. I'll open up calipers again. When I compressed the pistons they went in ok. Not too bad. I used a needle nose plier for the rears and a c clamp for the front calipers.

It's the simple answer but are you used to driving with better pads/tires? Did you burn off the release mold stuff/do the break in?

I have experience with AD22's and budget pads on a my previous SE-R. I know what it should feel like. I have not done a heavy break in on these pads. I'll taKe a look at the box to see if a procedure is specified.

Sound like the booster or booster vac line. If everything else is working like it should then that would be my first guess. I to have used budget pads, and they really aren't to bad. I never bed them in. Just really dusty. You say the car has been parked for years? Well I'd replace all the vac lines then. The booster line may have a crack. If you have ever stalled or run out of gas and had to brake then that would be the same as a bad booster. It leaves you with manual brakes.
