Thread: Inner Tie rod pakaging contents

So i bought some inner tie rods for my b14 and all it came with was the tie rod alone. No boot or anything. What all should come with a new inner tie rod? I would think a new boot and clamps and watever else?

i've never seen one that comes with a boot or clamps .... just reuse the old boot and use zip ties to hold it in place

They usually don't come with the boot. You will have to purchase that separately if you want to replace it.

cool would advanced or autozone carry the boot kit or something? I think my old boots are ripped

is there are how-to on installing the inner tie rods? whats all needed besides the basics? The hanes manual doesnt say much

All i can advise is rent one of these from your local auto parts store:

The tool is basically a supppppperrrrr long deep socket that fits over the inner tie rod and grabs onto to it so that you can loosen it; makes the job very easy.

people say that you can use a spanner or monkey wrench on them but i found it a real pita b/c of clearance and the torque necessary (granted, I also have a control arm brace and i was working on the ground).

1. Unscrew the outer tie rod from inner tie rod - count the number of times you turned it to take it off so that you know roughly how many threads need to be screwed on to maintain the same toe when you reinstall everything.
2. slide boot off
3. use tool ^^ and unscrew the inner tie rod from the steering rack.
4. Your new tie rod should have came with a square plate that squeezes onto the inner tie rod itself, on the steering rack side, when you tighten it (it prevents the tie rod from loosening from vibration). Place that over the threads on the inner tie rod that screw into the steering rack.
6. Place some loctite blue on the threads for added measure.
7. Tighten away using ^^ tool...not sure on torque.
8. Reinstall boot
9. Reinstall outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod- make sure you screw it on so that the same number of threads are on as before or else your toe is going to be way off.
